I gained some respect for Dean tonight
Edited on Mon Nov-24-03 07:04 PM by ColdnGrey
I'm a clark man at heart, but I liked the way that dean handled the double barreled attack against him. I think, at least for awhile, that he put the discussion about his temper to bed. He was able laugh and shrug off a lot of the attack. I did lose some respect for Kerry for the overly hostile tone he took and i never had much respect for Gepherdt to begin with.

Also Wonk should have it up tonight (don't know whether it's going to be an MP3 or video).

5. What's the matter with Kerry?
It hasn't worked in the past and still doesn't. His campaign is floundering and he gets more negative. It's almost as if he is so fixated on Dean he would rather drag him down with his own sinking ship.

Clark was strong and forceful tonight, though it is interesting that Dean would be attacked for being "too angry" if he exhibited the same resolve. Double standard.

Who won in my book tonight was Kucinich---he got the most applause.

10. Kerry's Chances are Shrinking
I'm not sure why Kerry is hanging in. It's possible that he's had his heart set on being president for so long that he's not seeing things as they are. He's a longshot at best.

22. He's toast and he knows it. That's what's the matter with him.
One more to go (Gep) and then we can have a serious nomination.

6. I appreciated him giving Kucinich credit
He personally acknowledged Kucinich was the only member of Congress on stage to vote against the IWR.

7. Yeah
"Answer the question! Answer the question! Answer the question!" is never a good debate tactic. The audience even snickered when Kerry began one of his answers with "I want to back to something Dean said..."

Too bad. Kerry is emmenintly qualified, and I had hoped that the talk of late about refocusing his message might salvage his campaign. But alas, Dean is so far up his craw there seems to be no hope.

8. Kerry and Gephardt were stuck doing the media's job.
Dean's actual Iraq stance was always closer to Kerry's than he ever wanted people to know.

A real press would have been aware of it and held Dean to his position all these months. Instead he disingenuously used people's impression that he was the antiwar candidate to hammer Gephardt and Kerry repeatedly and become the darling of the antiwar crowd.

I think Kerry and Gephardt have been left with no choice but to try to make news and force the press to see the truth and hold Dean accountable for his falsely sanctimonious attacks when his position was never that much different from theirs.

Dean sure did capitalize on the perception all these months. Ask Kucinich supporters.

9. Don't even go there
Dean supported Biden-Lugar, which was *significantly* different from the WH/House resolution in that it only authorized the US to "secure the dismantlement or destruction of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program and its prohibited ballistic missile program".

"The New York Times coverage included an succinct summary of the difference between the White House/House resolution and the Biden-Lugar alternative:

The major difference between the two resolutions is that the version agreed upon by the House and the president today authorizes Mr. Bush to use force to enforce "all relevant" United Nations Security Council resolutions regarding Iraq, leaving the White House free to determine what is relevant. In contrast, the Biden-Lugar language specifies that force is authorized to secure the destruction of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction and its ballistic missile program or to defend the United States and its allies against those programs."

20. Kerry was for Biden-Lugar, too, but you'd never know
that ANY concessions were forced on Bush the way Dean tells the story.

The bottom line is THIS: Kerry was not prowar and Dean was not antiwar. Their positions were closer than Dean or his supporters will admit. Correction, a few Dean supporters here have admitted it.

23. Dean has never been antiwar
and has never claimed to be. Personally, I've never claimed that Kerry was pro-war. Just anti-responsibility, at least in terms of accepting it for that vote.

19. Kerry and Gephart both sounded like petulant children!
I was half prepared to see Kerry stamp his foot and DEMAND to be given the nomination. He and Gephart both came across as bullies, and I believe it will be reflected in declining poll numbers.

24. Even some petulant children know when to shut up.
But not those two clowns. Well this is all for the best. The quicker they fry their fucktard campaigns the better.

14. I disagree
Dean was coached. Coached to a point of not knowing how to react. That is what I seen.

15. That was a fair comment...
and as a Dean supporter I appreciate it.

Kerry was obnoxious, I thought, and he tried to hijack the debate by personally going after Dean the way he did. It made him look like a bully and it was very unbecoming for a candidate who likes to revel in his own persona.

16. I am a Dean supporter and thought Clark "stole the show," but
I agree w/ you. Dean held his own - they were just waiting for him to explode. Agree about Kerry - he was a weasel tonight and Gep never has been attractive to me.

Edwards is still a very classy guy.

I must say though, despite my personal observations, ANY of these candidates would kick *'s butt all the way back to Crawford.
