just coming on.
"Iraqi witnesses say it did happen." Who is telling the truth here? I know who I believe. :grr:

5. I hate to be a stickler, but... |

I think it's 'WHOM do we believe'. Sounds funny doesn't it? Either way, I would not trust the Pentagon to tell the truth. They can't stand the thought of any war becoming unpopular.

9. No offense taken. But "whom" has essentially been relegated to archaic |

English. Evolution works on languages just as it does on other living organisms. ;-)

one of those notions English departments put forth to try to make their field seem as dynamic as the sciences.
I didn't get the official memo that "whom" had become archiac, and until I do, I'll consdier it a sign of an educated mind when people use it properly.

They still teach it in school and test for proper usage of it on the ACT exams.
Easy rule, the him or he rule:
"Who should we trust?"
if you can answer the question "We should trust him", use whom. On the other hand, if the answer "we should trust he" had made more sense, you would use who.

3. Don't believe the Pentagon! |
|
These are the people who made statements like "we now are in control of Mosul" and minutes later an embedded reporter was shown live in a tank taking heavy fire OUTSIDE of Mosul.

4. good luck pushing that story |
|
They have freakin' pictures. Or did the Iraqis drag those soldiers out of their vehicle after shooting them so that they could throw flowers at them, maybe?

the soldier's throat had definitely been sliced. Whom is correct; whom is still expected for the objective in formal written language. In spoken language such errors are to be expected; we cannot always know where our thoughts are going.

I was watching CNN this morning and when they reported this story, they really went out of their way to avoid mentioning the beaten with blocks part. I think the anchor almost mentioned that part of the report, but caught herself. It really made me think they were being told by someone not to go forward with that information.
