AARP rigged it own poll.
Thanks to Tactical Peak for catching this. Atrios picked up on it, and I found this also at the Katherine Yurica site.
http://www.yuricareport.com/index.html

SNIP..."In an attempt to prove their membership is actually in favor of the foul Medicare Bill offered by Republican lawmakers to American seniors and designed to eliminate Medicare, AARP resorted to rigging its poll results. In a two day survey conducted on November 19-20, and after it had already announced its endorsement of the Republican Medicare Bill, AARP announced an astounding 75% of its membership supports the new bill. The only problem is that AARP's conclusion is phony....." More at the site.

11. I saw some talk of this at the AARP forums.
To sue them for various reasons. It is quite an angry place.

4. alternative to AARP
If you think the AARP doesn't represent you, you may wish to consider switiching to an organization which opposes the Republican Medicare bill:

The Alliance for Retired Americans

5. regarding that poll
Some polling organizations care about their credibility, like Zogby.

Other polling organizations just want to make a buck by phrasing the questions to get the result the client wants.

6. Good information but how is this going to change things now?
Apparently the bill will be passed in the senate tonight and Bush will sign it.

8. There is hope for enough backlash to get it modified later.
I think that this kind of thing has happened before on a smaller scale, and I think they readdressed the issue. I had forgotten that, and I believe it was either Kerry or Graham who brought it up on the floor yesterday.
I don't remember the details.

13. AARP is committing suicide
If we win in 2004, by 2006 AARP will be discussed in polysci classes as an example of a VERY powerful PAC that is no more.
