8. Yes.
And while I don't much care for his writing myself, I think they make good introductions for people who are otherwise unfamiliar with the leftist perspective on U.S. foreign policy.

Frankly, Chomsky's writing on the subject is so influential that it really can't be avoided. It would be like studying drama without Shakespeare.

The Shalom book is my favorite, though.

5. In my opinion
Marx is absolutely dreadful to read. The ideas are important, but as a writer, he is horrible.

Edited on Mon Nov-24-03 10:18 PM by solinvictus
Basics:
1) The Federalist Papers
2) "Democracy in America" by DeToqueville
3) Anything by Tom Paine
4) Thomas Jefferson's political writings
5) Marx & Engels, "The Communist Manifesto"
6) Adolf Hitler, "Mein Kampf"
7) Bakunin's works on Anarchism
8) John Stuart Mill, "On Liberty"
9) Lenin, "State and Revolution"
10) George Orwell, "Homage to Catalonia". This book points out how the Communists, not Franco, were instrumental in breaking the worker's revolution in Spain.

Practical Knowledge:
1) "Total Resistance" by Major H. von Dach. This book will show how small numbers can and do matter.
2) "Guerilla Warfare" by Che Guevara
3) "Boston's Gun Bible" by Boston T. Party. A great accumulation of practical shooting knowledge.
