Kerry's Wife Weighs in on Guantanamo
<SEATTLE - The wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites) said Monday that suspected terrorists held at Guantanamo Bay should be given prisoner of war status.

"They were captured while fighting a war," Teresa Heinz Kerry said at an informal discussion with minority activists in Seattle. "They should have the rights that other prisoners of war have had."

Heinz Kerry, the heir to the Heinz family's food fortune, said denying the detainees the protections of the Geneva Convention is "insulting, ignorant and insensitive" to the rest of the world.

She added that under President Bush (news - web sites), the United States, once known as the standard-bearer for human rights, is now considered a hypocrite.

"The arrogance shown by this administration on human rights and in its foreign policy is horrible," she said. >

I'd vote for her in a minute. Heck, I'd vote for her for president.

6. Mrs. Kerry, thank your husband for the "war" that put them there
He voted for it. As much as he might regret it now, that's hanging around his neck and will ultimately take his campaign down.

8. Scott, Dean backed up Busjh all the way in Afghanistan.
Even when Gore and Kerry were criticizing Bush for it. Dean stood up for Bush instead.

11. Yes, I know. And though I opposed the Afghan action
it was more justified than this Iraq atrocity.

Dean still did nothing wrong. We have a difference of opinion on a few issues, but that's not a good enough reason to dump my support for him. He is still clearly the best shot against Bush and at overhauling the Democratic party stagnation.

12. Hah. Go look at when he took over as gov. in Vermont.
The Democrats were pissed because he kept the Republican governor's staff and appointees in office. He also aligned more with the GOP there then with the progressive Democrats.

I don't think you know your guy as well as you think.

Or, maybe you're just a fan of election year conversions?

18. blm, don't get distracted
Scott said "Mrs. Kerry, thank your husband for the "war" that put them there". We are talking about Afghanistan, which Dean also supported. Don't let Scott distract you with Iraq. He's just trying to cover for his embarrasing slip.

He blamed Kerry for supporting the invasion of Afghanistan, and Dean also supported it. And then Scott says "Dean did nothing wrong"

Kerry does it - Wrong
Dean does it - Nothing wrong

16. Funny, you said something different here
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=781979#782022

"I've said it before and I'll say it again, if ADJHS (AntiDean Junior High School) put one tenth the venom into attacking Bush that they do in attacking Dean, we might actually have a running chance to dump His Chimpness out of the high chair next November"

Of course, you didn't say that Dean should attack Bush* instead of the other Dems. I guess attacking Bush* is something Dean won't do.

20. Why isn't John Kerry saying this?
Why does it have to be Teresa Heinz who has to say what must be said?

21. He has said this, but it's not exactly a campaign issue
and he has agreed with her and supports this view when asked. But I wouldn't expect him to start campaiging on this issue. I suppose thought some think this should be a plank in the Democratic platform. Yeah, that'll win us a lot of votes.
