another rightwing publishing imprint |
|
...this one from giant Viking Penguin. From today's Publisher's Lunch newsletter:
Penguin Names Imprint
Penguin has announced the name of their new conservative imprint--Sentinel--chosen because "It symbolizes a tough-minded defense of America's fundamental values and national interests." They've also announced a launch list of five titles for fall 2004: Harvey Kushner's THE FIFTH COLUMN: The Secret Islamic Terror Network in the United States, Mary Eberstadt's HOME-ALONE AMERICA: The Danger to Children Without a Stay-at-Home Parent, Ronald Kessler's MATTER OF CHARACTER: Inside the White House of George W. Bush, and Larry Schweikart and Michael Allen's BEACON OF LIBERTY: A Patriot's History of the United States, along with the previously reported acquisition, Mona Charen's GREAT PRETENDERS: How Liberals Hurt the Ones They Claim They're Helping.

as usual spew from the right wing hypocrites! I'm sick of it! They need to shut the hell up! They want a stay at home parent yet they whine and squash anything that would actually help parents do that.
Why don't we start with a living wage for all....Nope they don't want that.
How about paying Mothers to stay at home for the first 3 to 5 years Nope they don't want those 'Welfare Queens' heaven forbid somebody in their eyes getting something for nothing......but but what about the children?
More right wing books to end up with the * in the New York Times....because they didn't really sell all those books to individuals Scaife buys up their spew!

Too bad there isn't a "fairness in publishing" law like they USED to have for broadcasting.

8. I imagine Penguin would start an imprint for "liberal" books |
|
if they thought they could sell them. If you saw a line of left-wing books being sold at Borders or what have you, would you want to buy one? I would if they were relatively cheap paperbacks on subjects that interested me and they seemed well-written, well-researched and relatively nutritious.

good bonding time. If we get tired of that, we can sit in the homeless shelter while she does her homework.
Yeah, that'll work.

6. The media needs a "right wing" imprint? Nearly all of it is right wing! |
|
That's like Fox saying they are going to have a "conservative" talk show.
Stating the obvious.

free enterprise and freedom of speech apply to people you don't agree with. who cares if there is another publisher of conservative books? Not like I will be buying them and its not like there aren't plenty of publishers and outlets to get our ideas out. This type of dialog can only be good as it will encourage discussion and highlight the differences in our policies. There is no reason that we should be intimidated by this and no reason why we can't show everyone why they are wrong and we are right.

...the corporations use their wealth/market distribution (and the political favors that reinforce those two things) to distribute more and more rightwing ideas -- via books like these. Yes, sure, we have Al Franken and Michael Moore, but the idea that a corporation needs to start a line of rightwing books to -- what? -- make the national dialogue more "fair and balanced?" is disingenuous. It's already tilted way over on the right already.
Welcome to DU, btw!

13. They're just going where the money is |
|
In the early 90s, publishers got hip to the fact that African-American women buy tons of books. Overnight, every major publishing house sprouted an African-American division. A very good thing. And they made a lot of money.
Now its the early 00s, and publishers have gotten hip to the fact that conservatives buy a hell of a lot of books. Conservative imprints have popped up at Random House, Penguin, everywhere. A very bad thing. And they will make a lot of money.
Our answer is to: BUY MORE BOOKS!
