Claim vs. Fact: Politicizing the War
Edited on Tue Nov-25-03 05:29 PM by ElsewheresDaughter
CLAIM: "I have no ambition whatsoever to use (the war) as a political issue."
- President Bush, 1/23/02

CLAIM: “Politics ought to stay out of fighting a war. There was too much politics during the Vietnam War. There was too much concern in the White House about political standing."
- President Bush, 3/13/02

CLAIM: " need to be very cautious not to seek political advantage ... Such commentary is thoroughly irresponsible and totally unworthy of national leaders in a time of war."
- VP Dick Cheney, 5/16/02

FACT: "The Republican Party is responding this week with its first advertisement portraying Mr. Bush as fighting terrorism...By indirectly invoking the Sept. 11 attacks, the commercial plays to what White House officials have long contended is Mr. Bush's biggest political advantage: his initial handling of the aftermath of the attacks."
- NY Times, 11/21/03
