Backfiring of prescription drug bill?
I was depressed driving home after hearing our local news station in Phillie touting the passing of the prescription drug bill as being a huge political victory for Bush and in disgust I turned the channel to talk radio. Sean Hannity was being blasted by a repub who was furious over "Bush's entitlement program" and his fiscal irresponsibility. He also chewed out Hannity and Rush for supporting the bill. I thought it was just a fluke until a second guy came on and said he was donating $2,000 to Dean because he was so mad about the bill's passage. Said Bush was a "Rockefeller Repub" but way more liberal than Rockefeller.
Could this prescription drug bill end up backfiring on Bush and Co.?

1. My chiropractor said his organization sold them out.
He has been undecided, but he asked about the Dean meet-ups. He said he is scared for us, and he likes Dean's feisty attitude.
He said that he is switching organizations.

2. I doubt it'll backfire
It doesn't kick in until after the 2004 election, right? So the people won't realize how they were screwed until after Bush is reselected.

3. It's not going to backfire because people realize how bad it is...
But because people from his own party view it as Bush selling out for political reasons to "an entitlement" program. Seemed like these callers on the Hannity show just couldn't stand the fiscal irresponsibility anymore. One declared he wouldn't vote for Bush, the other donated money to Dean. Sounds good to me...

4. Most definitely, but not necessarily why you think
Despite passage of these bills, they must still accomplish the goal. Take NCLB, for example. Many people are touting it, but when they see what an absolute boondoggle most of it is, not to mention a total waste of money, they will react. I doubt Prescriptions, Medicare, or Energy will be much different. Like Jr. symbolism over substance.

The Bush Admin is gloating now, but when the bills fais, they totally own them. Pushed by a Repub Admin, passed by a Repub Congress. No getting away from that.

Last, our political system is much like a pendulum. The further right, the further left. If you think of Clinton and Carter as speed bumps between Nixon and Jr., the pendulum is due for a heaving swing left.

Later,
JM

5. The "Entitlement" Fury *Would* Seem Bigger Than "Read-my-lips"
but then, perhaps only lying about taxes bothers the Repukes. The ONLY applause-line in Shrub's Selection-Inaugural read-athon was for lowering taxes.

8. a glimmer of hope
The heavily repuklican Phoenix AZ paper, The Arizona Republic, which gushes sickeningly over Bush in their unsigned editorials, ran a front page story touting the passage of it today, and how Bush will be basking in victory, puke, puke... But the funny thing was they did a "person-on-the-street" feature with various AZ seniors, of diverse backgrounds and economic statuses, all with some kind of dependence of Medicare and prescription drugs. ALL but 2 (out of 8 or so) were strongly opposed to the bill, and the ones who weren't were "undecided", and even they expressed great reservations - NO ONE expressed support, and believe me, if this newspaper could find a dog turd to praise Bush, it would. They had NO help among the seniors of the region, and they are usually very, very repuklican.

After all this shit with Iraq, Enron, CIA intelligence leaks, Halliburton, environmental degradation, joblessness, and who knows what else, wouldn't THIS be the kicker if THIS of all these things backfires and kicks Bush in the ass?? I don't want seniors to suffer, for they should be honored, but if it takes their anger to undo Bush, then please let it happen.

My grandmother has always hated Bush for this very reason. She voted for Gore in 2000 (she is a native Tennessean), because she just KNEW Bush was going to screw up Medicare and the drug plan. She loathes that man, and this will surely strengthen her resolve to live another year and vote against that sonofabitch one more time - she will be 86 by the next election. :-)

9. I think we should talk with people about nothing else ...
because everybody knows they are going to be affected by this either through their parents or directly before very long. And they can see pretty clearly what's what and whose responsible.
