|
Edited on Tue Nov-25-03 06:23 PM by matcom
i am CONVINCED that nomatter WHO the nominee is:
LIEBERMAN supporters will NEVER support Kerry KERRY supporters will NEVER support DEAN DEAN supporters will NEVER support KUCINICH KUCINICH supporters will NEVER support BRAUN BRAUN supporters will NEVER support GEPHARDT GEPHARD supporters will NEVER support CLARK CLARK supporters will NEVER support SHARPTON SHARPTON supporters will NEVER support EDWARDS EDWARDS supporters will NEVER support WHOEVERILEFTOUT (i am sure there is someone)
*btw, these are in NO particular order or preference*
sorry. just don't see the 'hardliners' gettin' "in line" with WHOMEVER is the nominee.

Lieberman really has no chance, otherwise he would be the most polarizing.
The most uniting candidates appear to be Clark, and Edwards.

Clark and Dean constantly are at the top of DU polls for favorite choice. Edwards isn't even coming in a close third.
And the good thing is that Clark and Dean are trying to stay away from being critical of each other. The two most represented candidates on DU are both Clark and Dean. If Clarkies and Deanies can learn to live with one another then we're in for a real contest against Bush/Cheney.

There will be a vocal few who will pack up their games and go home if their candidate doesn't win the nomination. I believe the need for a Democrat to win the White House will be the prevailing feeling and all factions will unite behind the nominee. I know I will.

Sad to say, but I see it in a big way.
Personally, I will support whoever is the nominee...but the hatred being flung around on this board is just not going to heal in time. Too many people already proclaiming they'll return to say "I told you so", and not enough people saying "my candidate made a mistake when they did (blank)".

It looks bad now and I think it may take a little while after the nomination, but eventually I think that we'll all come together here. There may be some people going third party and a few may not vote at all, but I believe we'll pull together for the most part.

be mistaken for an optimist. Chill!! It's primary season; eating your own is the only item on the menu. I just addressed this on another thread. I honestly believe that 99% of us (democrats, I mean) subscribe to the ABB school of thought. Even if our candidate doesn't get the nomination, and even if we have to hold our nose to vote for the democratic candidate, vote for the democratic candidate we all will. This election is THAT important; no self-respecting democrat will sit idly by and watch * steal another election. I swear I'd vote for Lieberman if I had to just to get shrub out!

17. The Democratic Party can nominate an Arts-and-Crafts coffee table |
|
They can nominate a pile of old shoes.
They can nominate a lime-green Chevy Vega.
They can nominate a rusty stop sign with bullet holes in it.
They can nominate a friendly, frisky Rottweiler-mix puppy named Max who likes to chew rawhide bones and woof at squirrels.
They can nominate a shrink-wrapped box of surgical gloves.
They can nominate a Popeyes three-piece wing dinner (with slaw on the side and a large drink - only $3.49!).
They can nominate a copy of the 1973 Encyclopedia Americana, for all I care.
They can even nominate Joe Lieberman.
Whatever happens, I'll be voting for him/her/it/them.

21. Nothing wrong, destructive, or permanent about a vigorous argument |
|
The original poster's full of bald-rd-sh ('scuse the french). We argue now, we bitch, kvetch, and duke it up for now. Democrats always do this. So do Republicans. If Greens ever get a contested nomination, they'll do it too.
It's called democracy and it gets messy when there's millions of us and we all care about getting it right. I've seen nothing that will preclude keep any candidate from supporting the winner. What's the worse that's been said? Sharpton implied Lieberman's a closet Republican. I've got $100 bucks against anyone who thinks Joe L. will do anything but enthusiastically campaign for whoever beats him for the nomination.
Or what about when Gephardt said Dean stood beside Newt Gingrich? I may not like Newt, but that hardly constitutes a devastating insult that would drive a real Democrat like Dean from the Party. Come next November, we'll all be united (95-98% of us anyway) behind our nominee.

Once a presumptive nominee emerges in March, all people at DU will be expected to either rally behind the nominee or keep their mouths shut, lest they provide soundbites for FR. I'm sure some people will be unable to comply with those rules, and they will have to be invited to hit the road.

I'll vote for him in a national election if he has a (D) behind his name.
This is what primaries are for. To determine who the best "D" is.
But after we have the nominee, for the love of our GOTDAMN COUNTRY, we OWE it to those men who have shed blood for this pointless war, for those children going hungry right now while we throw another $87 billion for Bush's Excellent Middle East Adventure, for those seniors near poverty level now expected to save enough to stay ALIVE when they have to choose whether to eat or buy pills that they will have to cut in half, for the protesters in Miami who marched peacefully but her greeted with cops in riot gear and rubber bullets...
For your mom, for your dad, for your children, for the LOVE OF GOD OR WHOMEVER.... VOTE FOR THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE.
Either that, or accept responsibility for being a traitor to the Constitution and everything we hold sacred in this nation.

|
Hi matcom.
I think your pessimism on this subject is unwarranted for the following reason -- even if people here are angry about the Democratic Party's Presidential nominee, there will be a few months for the anger to dissipate, followed by the Republican 9/11 shameless exploitation fest in NYC. I believe that virtually 100% of the posters here will be motivated to support whichever candidate we nominate after witnessing the disgusting spectacle of Bush's attempted exploitation of the grief of the 9/11 victims (despite the fact that he has stonewalled their demands for a thorough investigation.)
I am sure you will be happy if you turn out to be wrong.
Best Regards, Schmendrick (a Dean supporter who will enthusiastically support Kucinich -- or Kerry -- or Clark -- or Lieberman -- or Gephardt -- or Braun -- or Sharpton -- or Edwards -- or Gore -- or WHOEVERYOULEFTOUT!)

|
from the Deanites, after they spent months of viciously bashing every other candidate. Now they like what they see, and it's time for kumbaya.
I wouldn't worry. If Dean is the nominee, his natural affability will quickly unite the party, especially the Bush-lite, crypto-Republicans, and the fascist pink tu-tus who voted for the war, and everyone will fall in line, both here and elsewhere, and work hard for that talented, and above all, honest and above board, man. It would be an honor, in fact, to treat Dean and his followers with the exact same courtesy and respect they've shown to their fellow Democrats, especially those crypto-Republican fascist war mongerers in their pink tu-tus.
Have you ever seen a trained cockroach? Amazing things, actually.

39. The Hostility Has Been Wrenching |
|
I'm not going to stir the pot by naming camps. I'm a KERRY supporter. Some other camps flood the board with their pro-threads for their candidate, which wouldn't bother me if they also wouldn't flood with ANTI-threads and especially on other candidates' pro-threads flooding with anti-posts.
There's something very needless going on: In a group like us, a good number of us have our choice made, we made it early, and no amount of "debating" and prostletyzing(sp) is going to sway us at the primary level. "Conversion" is just NOT going to happen. So, those of us who are HERE trying to convert people would better spend their resources in reaching people OUT THERE in the real world. So the constant head-butting just builds hostility that will, indeed, be near impossible to overcome.

Those of us who have been around a while will remember the 2002 elections when Skinner nearly had to shut this place down cause we were killing each other. Registrations were suspended, posts that advocated for voting for anyone that wasn't a Dem were forbidden, and etc.
I'm vehemently ABB, I honestly have no real preference in the Dem candidates. But like you said, it doesn't matter. We're so polarized that we will not come together and support the eventual nominee.

Hell even if the republican Lieberman wins the nomination I will support him 1000 percent.
