DRAFT BOARD recruitment ad back up!! On SSS.gov home page!!!
http://www.sss.gov

<snip>

Selective Service continues to invite interested citizens to volunteer for service on its local boards that would decide claims from men if a draft were reestablished. This invitation for board members has been ongoing over the past 23 years, although there has not been a military draft in over 30 years. There is NO connection between this ongoing, routine public outreach to compensate for natural board attrition and current international events. Both the President and the Secretary of Defense have stated on several occasions that a draft is not needed for the war on terrorism, including Iraq. People seeking further information about Selective Service's standby boards or application should consult "Fast Facts" on this site.

<snip>

They put the ad back up, this time on the SSS Home Page! They must really be desperate to fill those draft boards up for the 2005 activation date! The $28 million 2004 "Performance Plan" that gears the draft up for activation by June 15, 2005 is now linked to on the home page too!

Those turning 20 in the year 2005 will be drafted first, probably 150,000 to 200,000 young men. Special Skills drafts will also force all doctors, nurses, computer experts, linguists, and engineers to register at the Post Office if the activation vote by Tom Delay takes place. Several million people will be forced to register if they are under the age of 45!!

22. I'll ask you something, if you don't mind.
Could you expand on the special skills statement? Both dh and I have engineering degrees, but no military experience. You seem to be implying that we would be drafted because of our skills.

Or do you just mean prior military?

I'm still trying to light a fire under dh to apply for the local draft board.

4. They don't give a
shit - they're in total denial - THEY don't think THEIR kids will be going.... post last week asking what they thought on FR - got 6 replies - none of which made any sense - but basically they're not worried about it. They think only the poor black kids are going.

12. I figured as much, yet....
Isn't it odd I still hold out some hope of a rational reaction like outrage when it will affect them personally? I guess I really am an optomist! Then again I have never dared to tread in Freeperland :)

16. Sometines I've just got to see it for myself
make sure its real and to believe it and see what we're dealing with - but the "hate" is really starting to get to me - I can no longer read the replies - just the headlines. And I can no longer stand Hollywood Halfwits/or RightNation as it is called now. Nothing but hate being spewed. You know - as much as I hate to say it - maybe it is going to take something like this to wake up the dumbasses. Iraq is "beginning" to get to them - but just a little bit. Wait until they need to send their kids so they can get cheap gas - what a deal.

5. So what about prior military folks
Can we get called back? Not retirees because I know they can always get recalled to service, but folks like me who did eight years and got out.

10. Two REserve Units in Cincinnati
have been put on "high alert" status - oh yea, they're going - probably before Christmas. Going to be running out of those reserves real quick - plus they are the most pissed off.

15. Sorry to hear that
and I don't blame her for being scared and not wanting to go. I have a daughter (thank God) - who is 21 and in college but she fears for her fiancee - who is 26. I told her I swear if you were a son I would have to shoot you in the leg - or something - anything. My child WOULD NOT GO. Period.

17. 8 years is a long time but in the Bergen NJ paper vets were horrified
when they received their recall notice a couple of months ago. They had been out 2-3 years. Any Arab linguists who had been in the Service have already ALL been recalled for wartime service.

Do not become an official Arabic linguist or any other Islamic language for your occupation--unless you want to be drafted first in Brodsky's Special Skills draft (2005?). For that matter, don't be a doctor or a nurse, although only several or a few thousand would be drafted out of 3.4 million who will have to register (2005?).

9. Thanks again!!!
Bookmarked so that I can print it tomorrow along with some other info.

I mentioned some of this to my mother, a beginning to slowly see the light Bush*-bot, and she couldn't say anything for a few seconds while we were talking on the phone. She's mentioned Clark a couple of times and even though she knows that I support Dean she hasn't gotten me to say one thing that could be construed as a negative about Clark. If some of the more sane ones are looking at other candidates be it far from me to say one word.....

No, of course not. Totally routine. That's why nobody I know can remember them advertising for draft board members any other time in the last 20 years, right?

20. Hey, DemsWW..thank you...
for all your "heads up"! I've been faithfully passing on all this info to those who are worried/interested. I'm starting to worry, myself, if my daughter, who is a nurse and fairly recently (two years ago) discharged from both her active and inactive time with the Army Reserves.........could she be called up again? Is that possible?????

21. I think if you are out of the Reserves, that's better than the regular
services. She could be recalled but I don't know enough to tell you how they would recall Reserve nurses. I'm not even sure if she would be included in the HCPDS registration although I would imagine so. That could make her eligible to get drafted if so but again, this is so specific.

If she were important to her community then she is exempt. Here:

http://www.sss.gov/FSmedical.htm

MEDICAL DRAFT IN STANDBY MODE

The Health Care Personnel Delivery System (HCPDS) is a standby plan developed for the Selective Service System at the request of Congress. If needed it would be used to draft health care personnel in a crisis. It is designed to be implemented in connection with a national mobilization in an emergency, and then only if Congress and the President approve the plan and pass and sign legislation to enact it. No portion of the plan is designed for implementation in peacetime. If implemented, HCPDS would:

Provide a fair and equitable draft of doctors, nurses, medical technicians and those with certain other health care skills if, in some future emergency, the military’s existing medical capability proved insufficient and there is a shortage of volunteers.

Include women, unless directed otherwise by Congress and the President.

Draft a very small percentage of America’s health care providers into military service. Impact on the availability of civilian health care would be minimal. Those health-care workers whose absence would seriously hurt their communities would be deferred on the basis of community essentiality.

Begin a mass registration of male and female health care workers between the ages of 20 and 45. They would register at local post offices. HCPDS would provide medical personnel from a pool of 3.4 million doctors, nurses, specialists and allied health professionals in more than 60 fields of medicine.

Require minimal training for HCPDS draftees, because they are already skilled personnel.

AND

http://www.sss.gov/seq.htm

SEQUENCE OF EVENTS

Here is a brief overview of what would occur if the United States returned to a draft:

1. CONGRESS AND THE PRESIDENT AUTHORIZE A DRAFT
A crisis occurs which requires more troops than the volunteer military can supply. Congress passes and the President signs legislation which starts a draft.

2. THE LOTTERY
A lottery based on birthdays determines the order in which registered men are called up by Selective Service. The first to be called, in a sequence determined by the lottery, will be men whose 20th birthday falls during that year, followed, if needed, by those aged 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25. 18-year-olds and those turning 19 would probably not be drafted.

3. ALL PARTS OF SELECTIVE SERVICE ARE ACTIVATED
The Agency activates and orders its State Directors and Reserve Forces Officers to report for duty. See also Agency Structure.

4. PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND MORAL EVALUATION OF REGISTRANTS
Registrants with low lottery numbers are ordered to report for a physical, mental, and moral evaluation at a Military Entrance Processing Station to determine whether they are fit for military service. Once he is notified of the results of the evaluation, a registrant will be given 10 days to file a claim for exemption, postponement, or deferment. See also Classifications.

5. LOCAL AND APPEAL BOARDS ACTIVATED AND INDUCTION NOTICES SENT
Local and Appeal Boards will process registrant claims. Those who pass the military evaluation will receive induction orders. An inductee will have 10 days to report to a local Military Entrance Processing Station for induction.

6. FIRST DRAFTEES ARE INDUCTED
According to current plans, Selective Service must deliver the first inductees to the military within 193 days from the onset of a crisis.

I figure I'm doing the Selective Service a favor, I'm just advertising what they put on their Web site!
