Library patron loses privileges after tearing copy of The Advocate
http://www.dailypress.com/news/dp-news-library1124,0,6485580.story

JAMES CITY -- A library patron's decision to rip the cover off a gay and lesbian news magazine has cost him his borrowing privileges for a month, the Williamsburg Regional Library director said today.

John Callaghan, 77, was offended by the cover of a recent issue of The Advocate, a national gay and lesbian magazine. The cover picture showed two bare-chested men leaning in to kiss each other. Outraged that the library was using taxpayers' money to carry such a periodical, he tore off the cover, took it home ;-), and called the editor of the Virginia Gazette...

Destruction of library property is classified as a Class 1 misdemeanor, which carries a penalty of a $2,500 fine, 12 months in jail, or both...

"If that's what they wish to do, that's their business. It's their library," he said. "I've made a point and I'm not a rabble-rouser. I'm not trying to cause trouble. I did what I thought was right."

5. at least he didn't beat up a librarian ;)

The librarians got off lighter than the former Solicitor General of Canada (Cabinet Minister in charge of corrections and parole, the RCMP, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service ...), who got beat up in his constituency office last week.

No one will say what sparked the incident. But Mr.
Curtis's wife, Corrine, told ATV News outside the
courthouse her husband had actively opposed same-sex
marriages.

Mr. Scott had been a high-profile supporter of the
Liberals' recent move to recognize such unions. As
head of the federal justice committee, he cast the
deciding vote to support the same-sex marriages.

"Terry has religious beliefs that he thinks he's against
that issue . . ." Ms. Curtis said.

Fredericton police and a spokeswoman for Mr. Scott's
office confirmed that the MP, who recently celebrated
his 10th year as a member of the House of Commons,
knew Mr. Curtis. But they would not discuss any
previous encounters between the two men.

Curtis was trying to make Scott put his (Curtis's) anti-same-sex marriage posters up in the office. These guys should try just staying home and decorating their own walls / stocking their own coffee tables with the materials of their choice. ;)
