I received a Second application today
from the Selective Service System. I applied online and got an application about a month ago and decided to forget about it. Then I got the one today, also with the letter signed by the state director. I'm beginning to think these people know something and that I'd better get back to them. My only intention in serving on a draft board would be to make sure they are fair to everyone. I just have a feeling our local board would be stacked with wingnuts. Have any of you on DU applied for this position? I have to tell you I don't relish the thought of being on one of these boards, but maybe some of us can make a difference.

1. I applied too!
I got my app last month and filled it out--only to realize that I can't find my own Selective Service # (reg # from when I was younger) without some searching (it is required for the form). When I find it, I'll send in my app and hope to be appointed by our governor.

I am of the same mind as you--there should be reasonable minds on the Draft Boards--But I take a ration from people who think the Boards are evil in any context (a view I do not share, as a veteran).

Anyone else care to weigh in?

4. Oh, by the way...
Included in the application is a pay waiver--If you were looking for a job that makes your pie higher--this ain't it!

6. I Could Not Serve On Such A Board
Conscription is just plain wrong. Always.
If they can't raise enough volunteers then the war isn't worth fighting.

Conscription cannot be made fair.
Eliminate *all* deferments? Are you going to send the disabled off to die?
That wouldn't be very fair (or very effective militarily either).
Medical deferments are not entirely fair either, since they are
always easier to get if you have the means to pay doctors.

Would you rather be unfair to the poor or to the disabled?

(and yes, this also implies that we must restore the safety net that Bush*
has been cutting away. Forcing people into the military by eliminating
all the civilian jobs isn't fair either).

7. Huh?
Please point to the part where I stated that I would go along with eliminating all deferments. Or for that matter be unfair to the poor or disabled. Or for that matter making a safety net for Chimp.

11. If the military draft legislation in committee makes it through Congress..
...it won't matter what anyone thinks about eliminating deferments because no deferments would be allowed except for those determined to be physically unable to perform. And the draft will be for young people of both sexes.

8. Yes - we need people like you if there is a draft!
I think the boards would be stacked with wingnuts, so we definitely need to balance things.

However, my strong suspicion is that if there was a draft, there would be many wingnuts turning anti-war.

9. You have an excellent point
however the rich republicans who I think may dominate the boards around here would be happy to cast some of their poorer members to the wolves, so to speak.
