Notice from Stop FTAA re exposure of protestors to bacterial meningitis
I apologize if this has been posted before, but didn't know if any of you attended the FTAA protest and thought it was important to pass on this information:
Carol

Dear all,

A person who was at the actions in Miami for the FTAA was hospitalized for meningitis on Sunday, shortly after leaving Miami. Their symptoms were flu-like symptoms, high fever, numbness and tingling of the fingers, purple splotches on the face, and severe pain in the back and legs. The hospital where this person is located is "99% sure" that this person has bacterial meningitis, which IS contagious.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF MENINGITIS?
High fever, headache, and stiff neck are common symptoms of meningitis in anyone over the age of 2 years. These symptoms can develop over several hours, or they may take 1 to 2 days. Other symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, discomfort looking into bright lights, confusion, and sleepiness. In newborns and small infants, the classic symptoms of fever, headache, and neck stiffness may be absent or difficult to detect, and the infant may only appear slow or inactive, or be irritable, have vomiting, or be feeding poorly. As the disease progresses, patients of any age may have seizures.

It is considered a "red flag" if you exhibit the first three symptoms
(fever, pain touching your chin to your chest, and headache) all together. If you exhibit these symptoms, PLEASE SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY. It is important that treatment be started early in the course of the disease. Appropriate antibiotic treatment of most common types of bacterial meningitis should reduce the risk of dying from meningitis to below 15%, although the risk is higher among the elderly.

Please share this information with people you know who were in Miami. If you have any questions as to the authenticity of this posting, you can contact me through my medical collective,
<mailto:MANY@action-medical.net> or through our website Indymedia Medical Action
