Dean admits to dodging the draft
Democrat contender admits 'dodging the draft'
By David Rennie in Washington
(Filed: 24/11/2003)

Howard Dean, the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination, has admitted dodging the Vietnam draft, obtaining a medical deferment for a back condition and then spending 10 months skiing.

Howard Dean

Asked if he could have served 33 years ago despite his back condition, Dr Dean told the New York Times: "I guess that's probably true. I mean, I was in no hurry to get into the military."

Dr Dean's candour may not have been wholly voluntary. With his campaign under intense scrutiny from Democratic rivals, it was only a matter of time before attacks focused on his remarkable recovery from spondylolesthesis, a painful condition caused by a misalignment of the spine.

1. At least I think he is safe on this when it comes to the Bush camp?
Would they even dare discuss it?

10. This might be a cunning plan to get that issue out in the open.
Bush can't say anything good about his own service record. Clark and Kerry can go nuclear on Bush of course.

3. isn't the Telegraph a Murdoch rag?
I'll believe this when I see it somewhere else. Til then, this might as well have come from Karl Rove himself.

5. Dean didn't have to dodge
And doesn't say if he would have avoided service if declared eligible.

How many times will the same shit be rehashed on this board? To quote John Kerry:

“I am saddened by the fact that Vietnam has yet again been inserted into the campaign, and that it has been inserted in what I feel to be the worst possible way… What saddens me most is that Democrats, above all those who shared the agonies of that generation, should now be re-fighting the many conflicts of Vietnam in order to win the current political conflict of a presidential primary.”

I CAN NOT wait until people running for president weren't born when the draft happened. We're closer than ever before. But someday, some jerk like this will say, "Hep dodged vietnam draft" and I'll say, "I WASN'T BORN YET, YOU TWIT"

Dean didn't say he dodged the draft. He is saying that in his opinion he could have served, and he would have. His deferment didn't exempt him from serving, it only pushed him into a category of people they would call upon if things really got bad.

ON EDIT

BTW... you have to have had your number called and then not show up to be considered a draft dodger.

9. even Dean's mom admits it "looks bad"
smart woman:

Even the candidate's mother, Andree Maitland Dean, said in a recent interview about his medical deferment, "Yeah, that looks bad."

11. This is a lie.
The headline has quotes around "dodging the draft" as if he used that phrase, as if he admitted to dodging the draft. He said no such thing.

The most you could say is that he thought he could serve despite the fact the military's standards.

As far as being in no hurry to be in the military, you could say that about anyone who didn't enlist.
