Bush mispronunces Nevada in first presidential visit

ASSOCIATED PRESS

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Nevada memo to George Bush: When making a first presidential visit to a state, use the right pronounciation of its name.

Bush, in Las Vegas on Tuesday, repeatedly said Ne-vah-da. To properly pronounce Nevada, the middle syllable should rhyme with gamble.

Mispronouncing the state's name "sets people's teeth on edge," said state Archivist Guy Rocha. "He's the president, and he ought to get it right. Nothing personal."

3. Oh, c'mon
now this is just stupid. I hate that fucker like everybody else, but this is ridiculous.

I used to live in Spokane where Gonzaga University is....you have no idea how many times I've heard LOCALS mispronounce those names.

What's next? Criticizing this buffoon because he shaves against the grain?

15. I know that....
but this just seems petty and dumb. We all know the guy is a buffoon, so lets stop waiting for him to trip over the doorjam and start focusing on what's important...that the most powerful man on the planet is also the absolutely most criminally dangerous person on the planet.

6. maybe im going to have hear it
sorry (im a phonetic reader anyway, pronouciation has never been a great strong point with me).

so the middle A is supposed to be pronounced like "Cat"? kinda nasal and not a soft a like in "saw."

8. Disagree with his policies, not his regional accent.
If we start hammering on people because of their accents, then we have to remember that JFK had a strong Boston accent. He pronounce Cuba as Cuber.

If we start critizing accents then we have to define which of the many regional accents is "American". Also it makes us look petty, and detracts from the issues. Finally, you risk alienating voters who happen to have the same regional accent but may be leaning toward us.

11. Believe me there is something to this
When I was flying and making the PA's you know fasten your seatbelts etc we were constantly reminded about making sure that we included full names and correct pronounciation of the cities and states we were flying into and the connecting gate informatio as to not offend the flying public. They really did complain and it was explained to us as a matter of "Respect", that we should take the time to do it right. I hope the people of Nevada who I am one of remembers his disrespect.

to take the time to learn the correct pronunciation of a person's name and certainly the name of an entire state. I also agree that it is symbolic of his narcisissm and arrogance. That's also why he gives the cutesy nicknames to the press-- can't be bothered to learn their real names (or doesn't have the faculties to do so).

I find it interesting that some DUers think we are being inappropriate to even discuss his faux paus.... Yeah, in the scheme of things a single mispronunciation is not a big deal and I doubt anyone is going to make decisions on Bush for that one issue. But it does have a subtle effect when he tries to imply he relates to a local audience....

18. it's not an accent
George is not Texan. He does not possess a regional accent, but a completely inadequate grasp of the English language and finer points of public speaking. I don't know how this man made it through college, let alone graduate school. Personally, I prefer an articulate, knowledgable president. and I never made fun of Clinton's Southern accent.

btw, I worked with a woman from Staten Island who said "dater" instead of data. It's stupid. and I am originally from NYC.

13. Neh - VAH - duh?
Geez, I thought this was going to be something really awful, like NEHV-vuh-duh. Sorry, I won't flame the stupid ass for that. I hear too many call it the same. My apologies, but it's a very popular mispronunciation. I'm sorry your state's name has been mispronounced so much and I've been a part of that. I didn't realize it was a short "a".

14. This is ridiculous
He's from Texas. Texas has a lot of people of Hispanic heritage.

He's pronouncing it the way most Texans would. I find saying 'Nevada' with a 'can' sounding 'a' in the middle, as opposed to the 'ahhh' sounding a to be unintuitive. A bit like saying enchilada with a 'can' sounding 'a'.

Regardless, this nonsense is utterly foolish, and a distraction to boot.

But I guess it's easy for 'news'papers to point out meaningless crap like this than report real news.

:eyes:

but this is stupid. He's a lying, bastard, phony but I don't care how he pronounces Nevada.

I'm sure people abroad think we're stupid when we prounounce Adidas "a-DEED-us". It's really pronounced "AH-dee-DAS".

This was actually an AP story? He mispronounced Nevada?
