Could I get in trouble for writing to Chirac/Schroeder?
Setup: I'm a computer guy who is a contractor for the Navy. I had to get a security clearance for this job. I'd like to send letters to Chirac and Schroeder asking them to help us make sure we have a fair election. If I sent these letters out do you think the feds would intercept/read them? Thanks.

2. Possible

But pardon me: what do you hope would that accomplish?
1. No way the US would agree to UN or OSCE election observers - and with good reason.
2. No way Schröder or Chirac would try to do anything about #1
3. No way your mail could get past the lower echolons of the Administration - you'd probably get the standarized American-French/German relations response. (the interesting part being, who answers: embassy, foreign department or Chancellery).

I know a few people working at the Chancellery - all letters are treated with due respect and read by experts.
However most letters get a standarized response, as said experts have other things to do (no dedicated department for handling mail). Very few get forwarded to the Chancellor. You'd should know that a file is created for every person writing a letter to the Chancellor.

That said: why would it be a problem?

3. been there, think you're OK
I am also a contractor working for the government and have had this very worry. I put a "Bush Lies, People Die" sticker on my car and I thought it may get me fired. My office has assured me that I am protected by First Amendment Rights, and I am really lucky to work in an office that is wonderfully liberal.
Your letters may very well be read, I wouldn't put it past the feds. Basically if I want to post or email my personal political rants, I do so from home. Definately don't send the letters/emails from your place of work.
