More people in the discipline seem to be calling them "choropleth maps" (this can help when you're using a search engine ...)


They are a cool way to display data, but it's also important to keep in mind that for certain variables one has to adjust the size of the jurisdictions to reflect things like population differences -- say for election results, like in 2000.
