Here Comes the Dark Horse: Edwards Takes S.C. Lead
>>>>>>>>>>>>>
(11/27/03) U.S. Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina leads in the latest presidential primary poll from South Carolina.
Edwards drew the support of 17 percent of likely Democratic voters in the telephone poll conducted by the Feldman Group Inc. Nov. 20-23.

Edwards was followed by the Rev. Al Sharpton of New York with 12 percent; former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean with 11 percent; and retired Army Gen. Wesley Clark of Arkansas with 10 percent.

All other hopefuls were in the single digits. Twenty-two percent said they are undecided.

1. Wow
What really surprises me here is Sharpton's good showing. Has he ever polled that high anywhere before?

2. I think so
Sorry, no coffee yet, so no source. But I seem to recall Sharpton being as high as 12% before -- I think he even once had the lead at 12%.

3. more like lame duck
I wouldn't gauge the entire country based on So. Carolina.

From the mouth of this Southernor, "no more southern presidents for awhile"

4. Nobody
is suggesting that you guage the entire country by S.C. However, S.C. can be an important part of a conceivable winning strategy:

- Only two other states have primaries/caususes before S.C.
- S.C. has more delegates than NH and IA.
- S.C. is the first southern state to have a primary -- first measure of who the south may support.

Edwards can finish fourth in IA and NH and still be in the race if he wins S.C.

5. "Dark horse"?
Edwards was supposed to win SC on a cakewalk. Edwards's performance on the debates left me unimpressed. I will give him credit for at least voting against the Medicare bill, something that Kerry failed to do.
