It's definitely worth checking out -- if for no other reason that to double check yourself when you have the thought --"A Nazi-like fascisistic regime has taken over my beloved United States of America." Are you correct in having that thought? Or are you being some kind of tin-foil nutcase?

Editor's Note: For the past couple of months, we've been corresponding with a Florida-based freelance journalist named John Buchanan. In October, Buchanan began publishing a series of articles documenting the Bush dynasty patriarch's business deals with Nazi-era businesses. This summer, Buchanan discovered newly declassified documents in the National Archives that he claims shows Prescott Bush (seen in photo), the president's grandfather, was more connected to Nazi Germany than had previously been known.

He broke the story in the New Hamsphire Gazette, a small, fiercely independent newspaper founded by the current publisher's ancestor in 1756. But when Buchanan began to reach out to mainstream news organizations, his story was ignored.

The Associated Press ran an article, but it largely discounted the new findings' significance. Buchanan went on the offensive, sending belligerent emails to news organizations that refused to investigate (he's something of a hothead), and has launched a campaign to run for President of the United States on the Republican ticket to publicize his findings (as I said, he's something of a hothead).

Buchanan argues that only through investigating Prescott Bush's connections to the Nazis that we can fully understand the Bush family fortune and the true nature of their political legacy. Does the story hold up? Even if it does, can you hold the son to blame for the sins of the father (or grandfather, in this case)? Recently our new friends at George Mason University's History News Network asked noted historian Herbert Parmet to investigate. This is his report:

3. OK, here's a question then...

Given that the Bush administration is basically in Ariel Sharon's pocket.

Given that the historical relationship between Nazis and Jews is obviously not the best.

They are both COLD BLOODED Killers that live to Kill because they simply CAN. There is nothing personal about this arrangement. It's working out well for both of them. Blood Sport. Each have more than enough targets to spill enough innocent blood to keep them cocky cowards.

6. There are no simple answers

The manipulation of ethnic conflict is just a tool to potentiate dictatorship. It doesn't matter who the victims are, as long as there are victims to fuel the fires of political aggression and opportunism. Whether one can be seen to have Nazi like proclivities without persecuting Jews but persecuting other ethnic groups at home or abroad is an academic question but definitely worth examining.

I dispute the contention that our regime is in Sharon's pocket. The state of Israel is something a frankenstein conceived in the same crucible that the led to the world wars. Wilson's program at Versailles led to the Balkanization of the Austro Hungarian empire and detention camps for stateless people whom no one would accept as citizens. This process was already underway but he formalized it. This defective ethnic or tribal concept of the nation state placed many unfortunate minorities in the prodromal stages of the holocaust, with the loss of human rights and civil identity.

This conceptual and political framework provided the model for the Germans to victimize and eliminate Jews and other disfavored groups in pursuit of the greater Germany or Lebensraum. Other Balkan fascist states pursued their own victims (of various ethnic groups) which we have observed right up to the current day. The Palestinians are the victim of a similar phenomenon in Israel.

Islam is the current target of choice for American corporatists. It is an opportunistic alliance of convenience for American WASP elites and wannabes who still discriminate against Jews and refer to them by racial ephithets in unguarded moments among "friends." I view the elevated status of Jewish leadership in the Pentagon and the defense funded think tanks as manipulative cover for the American centers of political and financial power rather than Ariel Sharon.

The relationships between the flawed ethnic concept of the nation state, anti-Semitism, colonialism, degradation of human rights and totalitarianism are all correlated in Hannah Arendt's seminal work, The Origins of Totalitarianism. Whether this makes one a Nazi, a fascist, or a totalitarian party member will always be subject to debate. Use of the term Nazi is an anachronism if it is limited to the anti-semitic criteria. There are many other Nazi like symptoms and characteristics which can applied more or less in analyzing the machinations of our current political leadership. Are they Nazis or just right wing totalitarians? The fact that many of our most prestigious and powerful corporate dynasties have a background of supporting Nazism in the past, is something that should not be ignored.

Almost every country honors a mass murderer as its founder and hero.

The independent use of intelligence is invariably punished as naive.

Yet curiously the application of intelligence to politics invariably leads to paranoia.

Sorry, in Gore Vidal's immortal words, Democrats and Republicans are one party with two right wings.

Preparing for nuclear holocaust is considered the realistic course. Trying to prevent it is considered hopelessly idealistic.

The terrorists are the counterterrorists.

Defense consists in creating your future enemies.

Work is a form of prostitution.

The health industry does its best work by getting people sick, so they need it.

All the nationalisms are mirror images of each other. Ditto the intolerant, Sky-God religions.

The most striking thing about Palestinians and Israelis is how similar they look and think, how their values (with regard to family, work, education, religion) generally correspond.

The law exists to be violated by its practitioners.

The guys who wrote the anti-environmental clause in NAFTA (allowing companies to sue countries to compensate FUTURE profits estimated as lost due to ecological regulations) went on to bring the first such lawsuit against Canada.

Every Pentagon official is a future Pentagon contractor (or a failure).

So it surprises you when hardcore Zionists and Nazis turn out to have certain affinities and shared friends (in this case, the Bush family)? This is an old, old history. Palestinian Zionists had a deal going with the Nazis, the Transfer Agreement (look up the book by the same name, author Edwin Black), trading resources in exchange for allowing some Jews to get to Palestine.

The Nazi Butcher of Lyons, Klaus Barbie, was ratlined by the CIA to Bolivia, where he masterminded two coups d'etat, the second on behalf of the drug mafia, and hung out with Spooks International, including old Nazi buddies alongside the Israeli business types who armed them.
