USA Today scribe Walter Shapiro's new book on the 2004 presidential campaign, "One-Car Caravan" (Public Affairs), just hit the shelves, and already some political types are regretting their words. Presidential wannabe John Kerry's campaign manager Jim Jordan told Shapiro that he'd been promised free rein to run the campaign since Kerry was "remarkably trusting." Alas, Jordan was fired a few weeks ago. Meanwhile, the book tells how Sen. Joe Lieberman called Capitol Police to have political activist Karen Hicks arrested when she led a 1993 protest in his office in favor of Hillary Clinton's health care plan. Hicks is now on everyone's "must have" list, including Lieberman's. But when asked to run his campaign, Hicks rejected Lieberman immediately - and she's running Howard Dean's crack first-place New Hampshire operation instead.
