Everybody relax and chow down. This is one day story.

And remember how the aircraft-carrier stunt worked.

1. exactly.
Wait till Clark says something about this visit, and how it would be nice if bush actually DID something to help the folks in the field.

2. thanks for the link
interesting, which some of the anchors on CNN knew this before they said it was the 1st time a Pres. ever visited the troops during wartime.

4. Did they really say that?
This LBJ image sprung instantly to mind. How stupid can those anchors or editors be?

There's a more famous photo of LBJ throwing himself into a crowd of troops but I couldn't find it right away.

3. Most definitely. Beside you don't think Hillary and Reed are
coming back w/ the "scoop." * met some Troops at the airport diner for 2 hours! Just a photo-op. Not so with Hill and Reed.

12. I remember seeing an LBJ photo op. His last I think with troops
He is at an airfield near the ranch (perhaps San Antonio) to see the wounded coming home. A lady damn near knocks him on his ass pushing by him to get to her son as they carried him off the plane. SS wouldn't let him go do it anymore because they considered it dangerous.

16. He basically "abdicated"
when Bobby Kennedy announced his intention to run for the Dem nomination in early March 1968. When Eugene McCarthy gave LBJ a run for his money in the New Hampshire primaries, Johnson knew his days were numbered. Kennedy's candidacy only reinforced that.

30 March 1968: "I shall not seek, nor will I accept, the nomination of my party for another term as your President."

Vietnam destroyed Johnson. He pushed forward the most ambitious social program since FDR, and then the Gulf of Tonkin came and completely ruined any progress he'd made.

15. As I recall, LBJ said to the troops
something like, "We'll get that coonskin and hang it on the wall."

Equivalent to junior's "Bring 'em on!" bragadoccio.

We can expect much the same result.

19. "Nail that coonskin to the wall." Lyndon Baines Johnson
I was still a believer when LBJ made those remarks in Vietnam. It didn't take long after that when the facade of lies began to crumble, and our long disenchantment with America began.
