Is DU an Opiate? A place where we progressive thinkers go for escape from our daily lives? A place where for the most part we drink the drug of optimism in the face of almost certain defeat?
In my daily life I do not see increased poverty, homeless people,or job loss. When I go shopping there are always plenty of people spending money. The working people here continue to work at the same low paying jobs they did a few years ago. All over our little village there are flags flying, support our troops signs, yellow ribbons tied to the "Old Oak Tree."
The few people I talk to, Democrats and Republicans alike seem perfectly satisfied in life. Almost all support the rape of Iraq.

like the Great White. Sooner or later we pay the price of swimming with the Republican Delusion of "Borrow and Spend". After all its the same thing as the Democrats(Tax and Spend Shit) except the Pubs want to make our kids pay for the spending. Now thats a con job if I ever saw one.

Are spending money like there is no tomorrow. Could be that they know something we don't. I look at my grand kids..Think "Boy! They got their work cut out for them."

people rely on the Corporate right wing media for their information. And this gives them the sense that things are all right just as they are. Ignorance is bliss. But here on DU, we don't settle for ignorance we demand the truth no matter how painful.
And the truth is that truth has no place in American conscience due to the corporate right wing media. And what's sad is that this propaganda machine is relying on the fallacy of a free media to legitimize its self.

4. I'm not so sure about the drink of optimism.....180.... |
|
but of idealism.....
We certainly see things differently from the majority of people....but I'm lucky in a way... along with Repub ex-pats here, there are quite a lot of passionate Dems who happen to see things like DUers do....more or less :-)
My new American neighbor is a New Yorker, and when we were getting acquainted, we were both SO relieved when we discovered that we both hated BUSH!
So I don't see the masses of Americans who are happy with the way things are...only on tv.....

now due to age and health. I do not see in person anything out side of that small world. DU provides that which I cannot see for myself.

13. Nothing wrong with enjoying a small, well-developed community |
|
where everyone is pretty satisfied.....
Holland is a little that way too, on a slightly larger scale.. DU provides a window for me to the American Progressive community, and since I haven't actually lived in the US for many years, it keeps me well in touch with my homeland.

A lot of OIL people here in The Hague - mostly Repubs, but lots of Progressives NOT in the oil business too... The Hague is a growing center for International Organizations and UN stuff, so very multi-national and internationally oriented people are congregating here.

The country is in a war footing and many like it this way. I my self think it will go along for a few more years or maybe until we fall for good but I am hoping we as Americans will not want to be people of war and killing.Even for a great power I do not think we can stand against the whole world for long and last as a great country.

but DU is a way to escape the insanity if only for a little while. I wish I wasnt so political. I just came back from a Thanksgiving dinner with my family, about 50 of us now. I couldnt talk to anyone about politics. Noone was interested. I brought up Clark and most said Who? Only my two brothers knew who he was. Being a political minded person in a world of non political people sucks in a way.

9. America--Escape from Reality? |
|
The resource footprint of american lifestyle is unsustainable and it only is evident at the gas pump... though more subtly with water and clean air. Outside of those things, the illusion is complete that american lifestyle is happy and not based on a global resource grab.... like you say... all support the rape of iraq.
Every american is killing civilians in iraq by gassing up at the pumps and paying those tax bills to keep the military in its agressive global-theft stance. The karma has already come home to roost... american culture has lost all touch with nature... and with it, any meaningful happiness... instead, its the american way to be strung out on pain killers, be they cannabis or of a legal variety... all to kill the deadening pain of false prosperity.
DU is the most real america... where a little honesty can question the machine that enslaves us.

just not the American middle! Our world is bigger than the average FOX news viewer, and on a global political scale, I think we are about in the middle.

12. We are experiencing a shared reality |

I'm very sorry that your life has turned out that due to age and health, your options are limited. If only it were that your age would bring you ever greater rewards and opportunities, and that all resources would be brought to bear to improve your health instead of improving the profit of healthcare corporations.
But I digress. The U.S. is living in its own invented Bizarro World. Those who are wedded to the bush fantasy ignore his cheating ways at their own peril. One day the divorce papers will be served upon them, for he will abandon them and their children when they no longer serve his purpose. His family motto is "chew them up and spit them out." At least the rest of us will not feel betrayed, for we see it coming. Pity the radical right, pity the fundies. They see with the eyes of a willful child.

16. I spoke with a relative (by marriage) today |
|
A relative (by marriage) today who I use as a gage of the uninformed public. She was irate about Chimp’s environmental policies and didn’t think much of the war either. So I asked the question “would you vote for him again?” The answer, “well it doesn’t look like the Democrats are going to run anyone better.”
There really is no hope.
