Do you consider Gavin Newsom a true Democrat?

2. No.
Not unless Democrats are into building political careers on the backs of the poor these days.

4. Yes
He's been endorsed by Al Gore, Nancy Pelosi, Dianne Feinstein and dozens of other prominent Democrats. That's good enough for me.

All this crap about Newsom being a "Republican" is nothing more than Greener whining.

That's some endorsement!

9. Well
You have Karl Friggin Marx as your avatar so I really don't know what to say in response. You probably thought Paul Wellstone was a conservative, right?

10. Feinstein voted for Medicare because of the financial interest
of her husband. Is that your Democratic kind of hero?

14. No
But I agree with her positions 85-90 percent of the time. A Republican Senator, on the other hand, would only agree with me maybe 5 percent of the time.

18. You didn't really address the Feinstein question.
She is worse than many Republicans.

I hope a good challenger shows up or she retires.

Getting her endorsement is a non-plus in my book.

She and her ilk are the problem not the solution to
for the Democratic party.

Disclosure: I am not now nor have I ever been a member of the Green party.

8. Of course he's a "true" Democrat
Edited on Fri Nov-28-03 01:28 PM by Rowdyboy
people just get all atwitter because they think a green may pull off a major victory. Is Newsom more centrist than his Green opponent? Of course. But the presumption that all non-Greens are Republicans and that the only "true" Democrat is a leftist is absurd. Not only that, it just untrue.

Pelosi and Gore know him far better than anyone here and I trust them.

12. Exactly
And if we only nominated lefties we'd go down in flames from coast to coast. Greens simply don't understand politics. It's actually kind of sad because many of them, like Nader for example, are really bright people (except for when it comes to politics).

13. Why exactly...
do you believe "if we only nominated lefties we'd go down in flames from coast to coast"? What is that based on?

19. Funny thing is Gonzalez isn't really all that left/liberal
For San Francisco at least, Gonzalez is pretty mainstream, middle of the road. He's a long time Democrat, who only joined up with the Green party due to infiltration of Republicans like Newsom into Willie Brown's machine (and Willie Brown's machine is everything that is wrong with the Democratic party right now).

San Franciscans put up with Brown's pro-corporate dealings for a long time, but they are NOT going to put up with stealth Republicans taking control of Brown's machine.

20. SF is not coast to coast.
What plays in Peoria has little to do with this race.

People here are sick of the being sold out by these
"Democrats" like Newsom and Feinstein.

21. I'm a Dem, I live here, I know Newsom...
better than Nancy and Al and I am voting Gonzales.

Newsom is EXACTLY what is wrong with the directions too many Dems have headed in.

Those Dems you have mentioned are backing Newsom because he has a "D" after his name and they don't want a Green taking the reins of the City. If Tom Ammiano or Angela Alioto (both Ds) had won the nod, they would have also has the backing of those folks against Gonzales. And if either of them had won I wouldn't be crossing party lines.

My hope is that electing Gonzales -- the best "Dem" in the race -- will send a message to our local and State leaders to stop sending us/ backing lame Dems.

Fortunately, from time to time the Democrats also offer up a little better.

23. If he donated any $$$ to Bush...
then of course not. Anyone that has sent Bush $ in definetely not a democrat.

And while I respect Gore and his judgement, I must say he's wrong on this one. Fienstien's endorsement on the other hand, is not a plus, considering she has gone along with much of Bush's agenda.
