Just had Thanksgiving Dinner with 12 Repugs |
|
and one child - who you just know will grow up to be a stinking Repug also. They ALL said they believed that Bush went to war in Iraq to liberate Iraq and that they would probably find weapons of mass destruction there.
In addition they think it was just wonderful that Bush went over to Iraq for Thanksgiving - whatta great guy so touching. Oh and that was so patriotic that he landed on that air craft carrier.
One older lady seemed to actually be somewhat sympathetic towards the Dems and whispered to me "I think that it was all about oil."
Excuse me all while I go to delouse myself....

I missed my usual torture. My mom (Dem like me) was there, said someone praised Bush's visit - she said what I would have said. "If he is over there let him stay and fight"

6. I DID make a scene... 12 of them vs. me |
|
The strange thing is that every time I looked at any of them they had this look on their face like they admired me I think because maybe they could tell that I had a lot to back up what I was saying.
At the end of the evening one of them said "Well I still think that we can't vote for someone else while were in the middle of all these problems." A few chimed in "yeah."

"while were in the middle of all these problems."
I never know how to respond to this insane response.
It is like saying "I do not know who else to hire to protect my daughter from rape except for the last person who raped her."

18. Say something like these! |
|
"Well, I'm going to vote for someone who can get us OUT of these problems."
OR
"I know he got us into these problems, but I don't think he can get us out of them."
OR
"Well, we didn't have these problems before him, so I'm looking for someone else."

|
This is what is so sickening about this war. Bush knows he can just keep it going and ratchet up the fear near election time. I've heard alot lately about how difficult it will be for an opponent to dislodge a president in "war", even if it is a non-war war.

tonight when my brother and i went in to a mutual rampage about the GOPers editing that ad to make Bush sound coherent, our brother in law actually said "well, Clinton used to do the same thing". Naturally, we both came of the couch saying "are you insane? Clinton is a walking, talking encyclopedia who would give a speech contemporaneously and never miss a beat, a vowel, a consonant, nada."
Drives us crazy every time he says that kind of ignorant crapola. He thinks if Bush can "get away with it" then that means he's smarter than the rest of us so it must be okay.
ARGH!!!

4. All you have to ask is why the Iraqis hate us if we have "liberated" them |
|
And then ask for proof that they don't. Then ask them how it feels to have become the party of fiscal irresponsibility, with the largest growth of government and the deficit since WWII.
Then finally ask if "mission accomplished" means our soldiers die so his contributors could profit from the war.
That should get you thrown out real fast.

My sister-in-law starts gushing about *'s surprise visit. My husband says oh the publicity stunt? Ugly stuff ensues. Unfortunately they (republicans all) loved it. They honestly believe that *'s visit was good for the troops. She even said she didn't think Hillary Clinton would be received so warmly by the troops when she got there. We said she had already visited with the troops and she was very warmly received. Oh, she says. All the while my poor father-in-law who just wanted to have a nice thanksgiving and who is also a republican was yelling, "no politics, no politics..." not a pretty sight. I am very worried about the state of this country over the next year. I am afraid it will be very, very ugly. (and yes, I am aware I am stating the obvious).
One more thing, they all think Hillary is going to suddenly show up at the convention and steal the nomination. We told them she has said she won't, that she will run in 2008 if * wins in '04. They said no doubt Bush will win. We said don't be so sure, but if he does don't count on there actually being an election or even a country by election time 2008. - They didn't say much after that.

8. Didja know that the people in Britain actually do love Bush too? |
|
See they love Americuns AND they also love Bush. And those polls that they take are just not right because noone at our dinner table has ever been called by a pollster.
Other evidence, one of the guys sitting at the table met an English guy who said that he just loved Bush. Therefore Europe loves him too. Also those protesters out there were just a bunch of crazy people...

nom. THAT was the one thing that perked me up.
BUT they thought that Dean would win the nom and that Dean would get beat.... BADLY. That brought me back down to earth..
One guy said that out of the whole bunch of the Dems the only one he liked was Dean - but he wouldn't vote for him because he loooves Bush.

At least I spent Thanksgiving with 5 Democrats friends and one Independent who mildly dislikes Bush. I can't imagine your pain. I have decided I can no longer befriend or date anyone by liberals. It just isn't worth the effort, since it won't work out in the end anyway.

16. I invented a case of the flu to avoid X-giving this year. My relatives |

are mostly rightwingnuts and I didn't care to get together with them. My SO is fulfilling his own perceived obligation down in Florida, so I grilled a T-bone, baked a potato and had my own thanksgiving feast privately. Plus I have a charter trip tomorrow and don't need any heartburn or recriminations. All in all, a good day on a "holiday" I don't give a shit about anyway. :D

22. Our Black-Sheep Repugnican Is Hiding |
|
Our family...25 of us, rarely get too political. We're all Democrats starting from union roots and moving into the professions. My two children, my daughter will be eagerly casting her first Democratic vote next year and my son joins the fun in '06...thus they are starting become both politically aware and vocal. This doesn't help that they are pure-bred Progressives...seen this nation go to hell the past three years and are very, very worried about the future (my daughter, a college Sophmore says there's a lot of this same feeling boiling under on campus) and blame this regime for everything that's wrong. Mom and Dad just smile.
There is one member of our family who is a "Proud Republican". Ironically, he's an immigrant...from Israel, who inhales Rush like Rush inhales Oxy-Contin. Last Passover (at the outset of the invasion), he and I got into it over the war. He played the "patriot" bullshit...saying he served in the IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) and was ready to fight again. I pulled out a C Note and told him I'd gladly take him to the airport and buy his ticket (I'd even pay for the Kevlar vest). That shut him up.
Anyway, as courtesy we invited him for Thanksgiving (his brother is a "regular" guy"...LOL) and at the last minute, he called to say he was not feeling well and couldn't make it. I called his brother and asked what was happening and he didn't know he wasn't feeling well. After dinner I was pulled aside and told the "illness" was a bad case of Repugnican Chickenitis...he knew some of us who be on his like a bad Repugnican cloth coat.
Hopefully he'll still not be feeling too good at Passover...

25. Don't give up on the kid.... |

I grew up in a Mormon, scary-fundie community where, even though my mum was liberal (my dad's a literal psychopath so he doesn't count - he's okay when he's taking his meds, but like most psychopaths, quits them when he feels good...) we all had to conform or be dead socially - literally, no friends. Even the freaks wouldn't like you if you were libby.
All three of us turned out fine. Environment isn't everything, and college years are far more important for who you grow up to be politically than your parents.
Besides, kids rebel.
Politicat.

26. I feel your pain.....you got it a lot worse than me.... |
|
I dreaded the moment when politics came up at my family's dinner today. I knew it would and it did, briefly.
Fortunately the pain was pretty much limited to my Repulican aunt rolling her eyes after she asked me who I was going to vote for (Clark). Prior to dinner my dad was razzing me about Bush's PR stunt. Other than I came out with just a few bumps and bruies.
I also learned my uncle who is a upper middle class white collar guy with three kids likes Bush about as much as I do and voted for Gore in 200. Very encouraging since he was a big Reagan fan. ANd I had him pegged as a wing nut!

30. I looked forward to it. I beat those Pubs up pretty bad |
|
There's nothing I love more than a good debate - used to be in the debate club AND into "mock trials" (didn't lose any) and almost became a litigator. The Pub who did most of the talking is one who has a pretty good sense of humor - so we managed to keep it non-angry.
I basically ripped up Bush and the whole gang for an hour and a half on everything from the screw-ups on 911 to Iraq and no-one had a whole heck of a lot to say in return. Whatever they said was easily refuted - it was mostly erroneous info that they got from FOX. I told them all that Fox was a total joke and didn't REALLY cover the news. Being a total political/news junkie - I had a had a TON of facts on my side.
They asked me who I supported and I told them Clark and just kept on repeating "4 star General, Rhodes Scholar, first in his class at West Point, Professor of Economics." They all agreed that they thought if Clark got in he would beat Bush and that the Republicans were pretty scared of Clark getting in.
There were 12 of them vs. me and I have to say - they all lost that debate pretty badly. The funny thing is that none of them got mad - it was almost like they were amazed. Every time I looked at one of them they had a smile on their faces - almost like the admired me for holding my own against 12 Pubs. I could tell that my staunch Republican parents were proud despite themselves. My mother said to one of them - "she was always a bit of a rebel but smart."
I actually think I put some doubt into their minds and one elderly lady came up to me and said "I think that war was all about oil." I told her about all of the contracts going to Halliburton and how Cheney had stock options in the company.
At the end of the night they were pretty dazed and all they could sheepishly say was "Well I don't think it's a good idea to switch while all this is going on."
I know I at least planted a few doubts in their minds and gave them all something to think about. Sometimes that's how it starts....

Next year in September I'll be going out to Minneapolis for my parent's 50th wedding anniversary (their anniversary is September 11)
I'm looking forward to it and dreading it at the same time - because my mother has become more conservative, and my dad makes Rush look liberal...
and I know with the sElection just around corner - that at some point during my stay - my dad and I will butt heads over politics..
it's gotten to the point where even a discussion about the weather turns into a debate/argument about global warming...
