This is probably the truest thing one can say about our times.
And Studs Terkel said it in a Salon interview.

"I was also going to talk about the perversion of our language: To go more "moderate" means to go more toward the center, and to go toward the center means to go toward the right. If you could see me now, I could do a demonstration: If our physical posture followed our political posture and the perversion of our language -- I'd have to act this out -- we'd walk around leaning to the right. That's the normal way of walking. And then, the guy who's walking straight: 'Look at that leftist!' Or if the guy who's walking straight leans a little bit to the left: 'He's a goddamn terrorist!'"

4. I read the World Book
At my parent's house today, I read the entry for "political parties" in the 1976 World Book.

I did not realize how much the balance of power had shifted between parties over our history. Democrats dominated the Presidency for the 30 years before Lincoln. Republicans dominated the Presidency for 60 years after that. I neither realized just how much Democrats dominated Congress in the middle of the 20th Century.

It was not surprising to note nearly all shifts in power happened because of a split in another party.

It was interesting that a period of domination for Republicans happened after they accused Democrats of being responsible for the Civil War - which they seemed to be, as there was a split in the Democratic Party. Also that a period of Democratic domination occurred after Democrats blamed the Great Depression on Republicans.

I don't think the current shift to the Right is going to be significant, as the accusations the Right have been making are either lies or don't make sense as Republicans have had the Presidency for all but three terms over a 36 year period and a reasonable amount of power in Congress. And now, they're in the driver's seat so have noone to blame but themselves.

I see it more likely to indicate a split within the Republican Party is coming ... who knows, maybe within the Democratic too ... I'd think it great if there are four major parties down the road.

8. Democrats ran two candidates in 1860
I am anticipating a splint in the Republican Party first: hopefully this year lots of R-voters will vote Libertarian, Independence, Reform, Right to Life ... and hopefully people won't vote Green unless the candidate has a reasonable chance of winning.

There's a lot of conservatives that are unhappy with the way the GOP has been behaving.
