Bush Owns the Iraq War

Bush can't hide from the Iraq War, especially now that he's gone over there endorsing it. No, it didn't just happen, and it was not a response to September 11th.

He's been quiet about the troops ever since Mission Accomplished bit him in the ass. He was deservedly criticized for distancing himself from the people he put into danger. Dropping by on Thanksgiving was absolutely the least he could do.

It's not the war on terrorism, it's Bush's war against Saddam, waged for reasons other than the ones he presented. He totally owns this war, it's an albatross about his neck. If he's going to claim being a swell commander-in-chief, he has some questions to answer about the whole venture.

It's Bush's war, it's Bush's war, it's Bush's war. Say it like a mantra.

5. His Hand Was Forced

If Bush didn't go he'd have to go at Christmas, when it would be a whole lot more dangerous. Tomorrow there will be photographs of Hillary shaking hands with the troops, making Bush look like a coward. That's a popular (and well-founded) perception of him.

Bush was well-briefed on how to act for his 2-hour walk-on today. But he's still stuck with the war. He owns it now! No ducking away from it anymore.

8. It was a obvious move

It is capitulation to the notion that this is his war. He was never going to get away with disowning it anyway.

So Bush/Rove decided to plant their flag on it. They will be working to spin it up into a success and make it his hallmark of 'great leadership'.

That's the game plan folks. You just saw one of the first moves. As determined as we are to make the war an issue, they are determined to make it a winner for them. (or at least neutralize it)

Bush had to go somewhere to deliver those lines (sound bites) to a nothing but cheering audience. Baghdad international is probably the best place to pull that off.

I can see how Clark softens the war issue, but I don't see how anyone can go head-to-head with Bush on the war issue.

It's too easy for him, as President and C-i-C to get a photo op from it, or change policies.

Anyway, has America EVER changed horses mid stream during a time that has been sold as a war? I can't think of any examples.

Part of the reason they got into the war was so they could have a crappy ecnomy and pull a lot of shit without having to worry about losing the election.

11. The War Issue

You're right that people balk at taking on the war issue directly. But if the war doesn't improve, it makes Bush vulnerable on other issues which will serve as a cover for the war issue. I think Nixon's failure to handle the Vietnam War was the real reason for his Watergate collapse. Nobody at the time thought it was a big deal, but it matured into a major political crisis. However, that crisis wasn't Watergate itself, it was the Vietnam War and Nixon's inept handling of it.

Bush is equally inept at handling the Iraq war as Nixon was at handling the Vietnam War. This makes him extremely vulnerable on some other issue. The Watergate burglary didn't reach the White House until Nixon's many opponents kept pressing until they made the connection.
