how do we take care of eleven million orphans?

http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg/world/story/0,4386,222386,00.html?

Africa is unable to cope with 11 million children who are orphaned across the continent, hit hardest by Aids, and the worst is yet to come as more parents succumb to the epidemic, according to Unicef.

United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) executive director Carol Bellamy told a media briefing that Africa's traditional way of dealing with orphans, through the extended family network, was collapsing due to the overwhelming numbers.

'They are a crisis that is massive, that is growing, that is long-term, and unless governments and the international community intervene, we are creating an explosive situation,' she said.

(add them to the orphans of invasion in Iraq and Palestine - sigh)

and here in america

WASHINGTON - A quarter of Americans living with HIV, the virus that causes Aids, may not be aware of that fact, according to the federal health authorities, who also warned that the US has seen an alarming jump in the number of new HIV/Aids cases among homosexual men.

According to a study released on Wednesday, ahead of World Aids Day on Dec 1, the Atlanta-based Centres for Disease Control (CDC) said the rise marked an upturn from the previous downward trend in US infections and underscored an urgent need for action.

1. Tell me about it
My final paper for American Foreign Policy is a position paper on the HIV/AIDS pandemic as it relates to the future of U.S. foreign policy. The research is brutal and infuriating, to say the least. x(

4. Your paper sounds as if it would be really interesting.
Any chance of you posting a synopsis here?

7. Sure!
I'm in the thick of it right now, but once I get it more clearly laid out, I'd be glad to do that!

2. Racist issue
I am a member of a foster-adoptive group and have adopted (with my wife) a bi-racial child. It is amazing to me how many people here do not want children of color. What is the difference between a child of color and any other child? 1 stinkin gene!!!

I now hope that the folks (mostly white, unfortunately ) who look overseas for children to adopt are brave enough to go to Africa. The places where people have been adopting from over the last decade or so are not as stable as most of the African countries are now that are facing the AIDS crisis.
