TV censors treat Americans like children.
Here in Canada, Saving Private Ryan, the Sopranos and the Osbournes were aired on the major networks totally uncensored. The word fuck is ok,nudity is ok. We get the American networks here on cable, and everything is scrubbed so clean no one would watch it. Why do the censors down there aim at seven year minds only.

1. I especially love when TBS shows a movie
They edit out "god damn" and "shoot when in reference to a person.

2. easy answer
because we are a country whose leaders fear the Sky God. If we allow networks to say words like shit, and show the breasts women on tv, then Satan will come and there will be hell on Earth.

3. Threats of advertiser boycotts by fundie groups might be one reason.
We have lots of watchdog groups down here who will threaten the networks if they air shows that are "controversial". Among what would be controversial to these people are bad language and nudity. And homosexuality, depicted honestly, in any form.

The networks cower in fear over any advertiser boycotts...or the threat of them.

5. There really is a difference between Canada and the US
Up here i find people get more offended if you edit out that stuff. A sponsor would be more likely to worry about being seen as a fundie right winger up here as opposed to a sinful lefty.

I think the CBC has a lot to do with it, they kinda set the standard and they love swearing and naked people!

8. I must be a Canadian at heart
:D

If people don't like it, they can change the channel. That's what I do and I do it often. Will be doing it more if the US becomes a military state.

6. Isn't that something, swede?
No...the fundies don't seem to give a damn about the violence on television and movies. But, man, if a show dares to show nudity (or two men in bed together like the episode of "thirtysomething"), then my God, Western civilization itself is threatened.

Weird priorities, to say the least.

10. In the sixties and seventies it looked like the US would lead the way,
with liberal and progressive values. Somehow along the way it changed. It makes me nervous,I can imagine what it does for you living in this rightwing themepark in the making.

9. That's because we make violence romantic
Romantic and heroic. At least when it comes to war. And when it comes to saftey in the general public. It's not about fixing the problem in America. It's about bombing it, shooting it, killing it, anything but fixing the reasons why these things happen.

But in terms of the nudity brought up in another post, we all want nudity too. Look at pornography. I'm not saying pornography is the way to go about that exactly, but it's there. Multi-billion dollar business. We want it, but we don't want to admit it. The corporations back the porn industry, but don't want to admit it. It's all about religion, and fearing God, but also wanting to make as much money as we can, while hiding it, because of the shame factor, even though it's a basic biological need(sex, not porn).

We are, by any standard, an odd country.
