Anyone know any dems that became repubs?
I was curious if anyone knew any of these people that are supporting Bush* because of his "great handling after 9/11"? You know, the Ed Koch, Zell Miller democrats that have bought into this myth that Bush* has handled the "war on terror" well...

I spoke to a friend of mine soon after the war on Iraq had started and he told me he supported it, but sure enough I checked his IM away and his message said "Dean for America", so it seems like most dems and left leaning independants that were fooled by Bush's* lies, are now returning back...

If that's the case, that's good news...We need as many of those that supported Gore in '00, that we can get, as well as Nader supporters, and uninformed voters that went for Bush in '00 that are regretting it now.

voted for Gore in 2000, says he'll vote for Dean in the primary but "will probably vote for Bush in the general anyway" because he "liked the way he behaved after 9-11"
He's been wavering back and forth every couple months.

5. point out that the "War on Terror"
Point out that the "War on Terror" is being compromised by the war in Iraq.

It means fewer soldiers in fight in Afghanistan and fewer translators to translate possible terrorist messages, who are instead translating interviews with Iraqui insurgents.

17. Liked the way Bunnypants behaved after 9/11?? Was that when he...
...continued to read with the 2nd grade class in Florida for another 30 minutes after he was told about the second impact on the WTC?

Or was it when he went AWOL with Air Force One for several hours flying around the country?

Maybe it was when he delayed going to New York City to allow the air to once again be breathable, something they failed to mention to the thousands of the rescue workers.

Perhaps it was the attack on Afghanistan that did absolutely nothing to halt, or even slow, terrorist attacks.

It could have been the tax-cuts that benefit only the top 1% of Americans, or perhaps the Patriot Act that allows an American citizen to be detained indefinitely with no right to counsel.

On the other hand, maybe it was the illegal invasion of Iraq for falsified reasons that impressed your friend...the illegal invasion that has cost the lives of thousands of Iraqis and hundreds of Americans.

So, what does your friend remember positive about Bunnypants' "behavior" that stands out in his mind?

3. I have an occupational aquaintance that switched
to the repugs this fall. I had a long talk with him about his change. The thing that stuck in my mind was the pain that he had suffered....... "When the doctor stuck that straw in my ear to suck my brain out, it really hurt", he said. Next he had to have his heart surgically removed...... Man, that's gotta be painful!

4. Gov. John Connally, the late ex-governor of Texas.
When he rode in the motorcade with JFK, he was a Democrat. While LBJ was in elected office, he remained loyal Democrat and LBJ's right hand man.

A short while after LBJ's passing, when Nixon was prez, Connally switched parties. The rumor was Dick wanted Connally for the veep spot after Spiro Agnew got the ziggy for the kickback scheme.

8. Zell Miller (from what I see) is just one of the last Dems to
switch.

You have to realize that many, many Democrats switched to Republican with Reagan. (Reagan himself used to be a Democrat). These were primarily religious fundamentalist southerners, but they included others as well.

Likewise, the site owner of FreeRepublic was a Democrat even when he founded that forum.

There has been a huge sea change in culture and politics in the U.S. during the past 30 years or so. We now live in such a fractured and divided society along cultural and political lines.

Fiscal responsibility, for instance, is now a priority for Democrats, when it used to be a Republican virtue. The same goes for many civil rights matters, if you go back far enough. Parties change. The Republican party was hijacked. There are very few real, IKE conservatives left in that party. They were good people, but most of them either bolted or died. Democrats were good people too--Republicans and Democrats used to argue back then, but they were never so stupid as to choose their friends that way.

9. Yes, lots of them.
In 1960 my state was solid yellow dog Democrat. There was hardly a single Republican office holder in the whole state. Now, it is heavily Republican.

once they are shown the real agenda of the republican
party, they quickly learn that the repukes don't
serve the intrests of everyday working folks .

11. NEOCONS
The founding fathers of the neocon ideology were 60's liberals that became disenchanted during the 70's and formed the framework for Reagan's neocon "anti-legacy".

Here's a link, check it out:

13. nope, not a one.
in this red state... though college town... have found no shift personally. Most recent local elections across the state favored democrats (even some solid repub city councils shifted... for the first time in a very long time... to democrat).

My nephew (moderate dem) who is a freshman at a conservative U... finds more folks joking about bush... and hangs out with some of the local ROTC folks (due to a roomie) - who strongly urge him NOT TO GO ROTC because (since they joined more than 2 years ago) things are so 'out of wack'. Keep in mind - this is in Indiana - NOT a hotbed of liberalism.

Our city has a town/gown split... with some of the town being much more conservative... but the repubs have gotten so ugly that a friend living in a town area has found some folks stating that while they have ALWAYS voted repub.. they will NOT vote bush next year, and will vote for any democratic candidate. No lie.

But all of the Democratic voters I know personally first opposed the war, and now oppose it even more. However, I do know many Republican and independent voters who originally backed the war..but are now singing a different tune.

15. Here in Texas
just about everyone over age 50 who votes Republican and has lived in Texas throughout used to be a Democrat. Thirty years ago there were basically no Republicans down here. Either they moved in or switched because most vote Republican now.
