I printed this out a while back. I was really angry at the History Channel documentary "PT 109-A Question of Heroism" and decided to do some research myself. I'm glad I did.

3. Yep...he actually lied about his bad back to serve in wartime.

I think that's part of why he is so much a legendary hero in many people's lives. No matter how much he had been given as a person, he always went a step further to give back, even under great risk and pain to himself.
