2004 Is Now for Bush's Campaign
Early Advantage in Funds, Voters Sought

By Dan Balz and Mike Allen
Washington Post Staff Writers
Sunday, November 30, 2003; Page A01

President Bush's reelection team, anticipating another close election, has begun to assemble one of the largest grass-roots organizations of any modern presidential campaign, using enormous financial resources and lack of primary opposition to seize an early advantage over the Democrats in the battle to mobilize voters in 2004.

Bush's campaign Web site already has signed up 6 million supporters, 10 times the number that Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean has, and the Bush operation is in the middle of an unprecedented drive to register 3 million new Republican voters. The campaign has set county vote targets in some states and has begun training thousands of volunteers who will recruit an army of door-to-door canvassers for the final days of the election next November.

The entire project, which includes complementary efforts by the Republican National Committee (RNC) and state Republican parties, is designed to tip the balance in a dozen-and-a-half states that both sides believe will determine the winner in 2004.

1. I go with what I see
in Boone County, AR, one of the most Republican counties around. I have seen exactly ONE Bush bumper sticker, despite the fact that the local GOP has been out at festivals, etc, touting bumper stickers, etc. All of the "Veterans for Bush" stickers that were so prevelant during 2000 are gone. Don't believe propaganda from the right. Use your eyes.

2. six million people signed up?
I think not. They are always going around trying to pretend they have grassroots support. I'd just love to see their list of six million. Doesn't exist.

4. I think their Rwing letter machine went into a loop!
It probable was Karl Rove generating at least 5 million registrations.
I think some of us should sign up just to see what they will be up to. You know, like the Freepers here at DU.

6. I think it's improbable that they'd have six million.

5. That's what I found most unbelievable. It's as if they're
trying to rub this into our faces. I don't know anyone who supports that guy! The more I think about it, the more I wonder how they define "supporters."

I think that's the key.

3. We need to counter on every turn. See my post at the link below.

We need to educate people about who they are really supporting. And the fact that Bush website has signed up 6 million is not alarming. It may be more than Dean, but it is not more the Dem candidates combined. Remember, Bush is unopposed.

8. 6 Million. Hmmm. Interesting number.

My memory's fuzzy here, but didn't didn't another '6 Million' figure have something to do with the 1940s? <sarcasm>

I don't believe the number either, but it's still interesting that they chose 6 Million, instead of 3, 4, 7, 9 Million...isn't it?

9. But..............
has he increased his base one iota? As it stands now, he will be hard to defeat given a legitimate election. However I haven't seen as where he's drawn anyone new into his fold. He has got to attract new voters to actually win this time, and I haven't seen that happening at all.
