Poll question: Which issue is more important to social conservatives? Abortion or gays?
Edited on Sat Nov-29-03 06:44 PM by La_Serpiente
Now that SCOTUS has issued the ruling Lawrence vs. Texas in favor of GLBT people, the fundamentalist right (I am not going to use the word "religious" anymore since they are not entitled to represent all that religion encapsulates) has gone bonkers and is going into hyperspeed to enact a constitutional amendment.

I am also convinced that abortion is a still on the radar screen for them. So, what do you think the fundamentlist right feels more passionate about? Which issue do they place higher on their list of priorities.

Abortion or GLBT rights?

1. I'm saying abortion
though I think it's a close vote. There are more women to control than homosexuals, so I'm going with abortion.

2. The reason I picked GLBT rights here
is because the hypocritical fundies are getting abortions on the sly, as needed, we all know that; but they want all non-heterosexuals DEAD. Period. They can quietly, reluctantly accept the daughter or niece that "needed to have the baby taken," but they'll never accept a daughter or niece if she's a lesbian!

4. Abortion - they'll drag out the "Dems are baby-killers" charge next year
I'm sure of it. Its always good for getting the mob riled up, er, motivating their base, I mean...

5. First get that baby born, and then dictate its sexuality
And then draft it into the perpetual army in the never-ending war against tay-ruh-izm.

7. I'm going to have to go with abortion since the twit* in his last press
conference (1 of 8 I believe) was asked about banning abortion entirely and he stated that, "America isn't ready for that yet!" not exact quote of course but I don't think many caught that little omission. Also I believe the right to lifers are a very vocal support base for the repubs.

8. Which is a plane's most important wing?
Edited on Mon Dec-01-03 02:51 PM by Liberator_Rev
One of my pet peeves is the "which is most important?" (or favorite, or #1, etc.)question or poll!

How would you like to be asked "which is the one finger you want to keep?" or "Which one wing do you want fixed on the plane you are about to board?"

What is this obsession so many of us have with narrowing everything down to ONE? Can't we handle TWO, or THREE, or even (God forbid!)
even MORE?

MANY issues are fairly equally important to social conservatives, just as a lot of issues are important to US, and I'm not about to tell anybody, "To hell with Gay rights, or Women's rights, just so long as you give me the ONE thing I want MOST."

9. GLBT
They've been unable to alter the minds of half the population with regards to abortion, so they need an enemy that can be rounded up.

10. Abortion
No contest.

Know who the Log Cabin Republicans are?

Is there even a pro-choice Republican group?

Another way to look at it: which is a life or death issue?

11. My guess is that they are going to whip up a frenzy
over GLBT rights so that if Dean wins the Dem nomination, their faithful will be in the right frame of mind.

They will first help create and frame the issue and then be able to motivate their faithful to GOTV with the threat that if Dean is elected, the traditional family structure will cease to exist and it will be the downfall of the entire civilization.

17. 'homosexual agenda, homosexual agenda.......'
In OK that's all you hear on 'christian' radio and TV and right wing talk shows.

They did a big start up in Oct ..... a week of 'defending marriage'.

If Dean is the nominee, that is ALL that the media will talk about.

Get out all the religious right voters everywhere; they are NOT only in the south. They might be the deciding factor in some states.

Although I like a lot I've heard about Dean, I think with him as the nominee it will be almost impossible for us to win ...... especially when you add in the total republican control of TV and Diebold.

Clark is the only one who might have a chance against bushco here in OK and I suspect in many other states.

12. Next on the fundy agenda: Women wearing pants
I figure they'll eventually just work their way through all the other 'abominations' detailed in Leviticus, don't you think?

13. I wish I knew
I can't begin to understand what goes on in the "mind" of a fundie. I can tell what my cat wants and my dog, too. But I haven't a clue with these automotons.

From what I hear, they always lump things all together anyway. Gays, lesbians, pick-pockets, abortionists, pornographers, rapists, drunks, kleptomaniacs, blasphemers. It's all the same to them.

14. Abortion
There are numerous pro-life orgainzations. There really aren't that many organizations whose sole purpose is to oppose gay rights.

15. Gay Marriage
The righties need a new group to hate and fear. The anti-abortion rant was never about banning abortions but about creating a wedge issue for the powerful. I think most know that banning abortion will backfire in a few years. I think they are gearing up for the gays are threatening basic American values theme. :shudder:

16. it depends on what you mean by important
Abortion is an important issue for conservatives because the right to abortion is the current norm and changing it would mean that their base of support would have to channel their energy into supporting the current legal climate.

Whereas now, conservatives can rally their base because they are still technically "fighting" for their cause - which is to get abortion criminalized. Once it becomes criminalized - there goes the conservative movement - what will they do after abortion is criminalized? Protest in front of pharmacies that sell condoms?

Gay Marriage, on the other hand, is something conservatives are fighting against to keep out of society - which means there is a less concentrated effort than the one they put up for abortion. If gay marriage were already legal, and conservatives were rallying for a ban, then I think we'd see them value this issue as strongly as they do abortion.

They're ready for Dean as the nominee.

19. Although Fundamentalist Christians ALWAYS Oppose Abortion Rights...
... and work tirelessly to roll back the clock, they are more VOCAL and more DIRECT when demonizing GLBT folks.

They need a demon, a boogeyman, an villain... and the Queer community is it this year. It's worked in election years past... I guess they figure 'why not revive a classic success' eh?

And people wonder why I hate Christian fundamentalists so much. Duh?!
