The Photo Op
My mother, who is no fan of Bush or this war, was lauding the photo op. While it was in a sense the right thing to do, I argued with her about his motives and the nature of his visit. I pointed out four things:

1. The hypothesis that he felt threatened by Hilary's trip to Afghanistan and Iraq.

2. His cutting of veteran's benefits when he sent the soldiers there. She agreed that those cuts were wrong.

3. The fact that he has never attended a single soldier's funeral. She expressed a mild shock at this.

4. The media block of returning caskets.

After this the conversation was at an end. It felt good for me to get my point across. Of course the point was that one grand gesture that has nothing of substance behind it does not make up for falling short in other areas.

1. excellent points to make to my family
Thanks for the pointers about the photo-op. My dad is a loyal Republican and can never refute me when I hit him with the facts.

2. Ask your mother how she would feel ...
Edited on Sat Nov-29-03 09:35 PM by Military Brat
... if someone "important" showed up for Thanksgiving, brought Fox "news" personnel (having ditched CNN in Washington), paraded around with a platter of perfectly photogenic turkey, potatoes and grapes, and then ran off without even breaking bread with her family. (Not one bite did he share with the troops at their table.) Rather rude, isn't it? I mean, it's Thanksgiving dinner, right? I would be insulted.

The whole thing was a sham.

4. Good point....
About him not staying to eat with the soldiers.

Telling her about the other side was easier for me because she does not care for Bush or the War, but was excited about the photo op.

5. Bush likes to replay previously good scenes. This was one.
Seems his dad went to Kuwait or something for Thanksgiving when he was pres. Clinton went to Bosnia I think when he was pres. It played well before, so it should play well again.

Like 9-11: the tearful scene where Bush tells us that the mother of one of the firemen came rushing up to him on his visit to NY and told him about her son and gave him her son's badge. And Bush went on about what that meant for him.

1. It was a replay of a scene his dad did - almost the same script.
2. The Bush team had to ask the woman for the badge - she didn't run up to him.

Same creep, different script.

Then there was the Kennedy script for the Americorps instead of the Peace Corps. And a few other I don;t remember.

6. Bush IS a creep
This Bush guy is a "man" who has never had to pay for any of his failures -- has always had his daddy pick up after him because to do otherwise would have been far too embarrassing for the family. And, God knows, one should NEVER mention the fact that Granddad was a Nazi sympathizer and ally...(oh, no, but that would be fully anathema to what we want these stupid fucks to believe)...the fact is, our "President" is a dupe -- and a stupe! It's the CABAL, folks!
