Thank you, George W. Bush. For bringing Reagan Democrats back where they belong - to the only party which cares about them. And when they come back, its landslide city.

This is how we will win..

NASCAR dads may drive race to White House for Democrats - Group key to carrying Michigan, Southern states

snip

The term NASCAR dad was coined last year by Democratic political pollster Celinda Lake as she described mostly white, culturally conservative Southern rural men who once voted Democratic but switched parties to vote for Ronald Reagan and, with few exceptions, have been doing so ever since. They have been instrumental in turning the South from solid Democratic into a Republican stronghold.

While NASCAR officials dispute the term, contending it stereotypes the country's 75 million automobile racing enthusiasts, they concede that their fans tend to be fiercely patriotic, pro-gun, and financially and culturally conservative with a tendency to vote Republican.

According to exit polls, about 70 percent of Southern white men voted for Bush in 2000. To win the presidency, a Democrat must win over those voters.

Democrats believe President George W. Bush is vulnerable on a sour economy that has cost the nation nearly 3 million jobs since he took office and the war in Iraq that is claiming the lives of American soldiers on an almost daily basis.

"Normally, these guys are a slam dunk constituency for Republicans," says pollster John Zogby. But for the past few years, they have watched helplessly as manufacturing jobs moved out of the country.

1. Don't forget the military vote, too. . .
many of those in the military are related to the "NASCAR" dads in spirit, if not in real life.

That vote is also up for grabs, according to the Washington Monthly.

7. Thanks for posting that one, Frankzappa.
It was long, but worth reading.

I especially enjoyed a blurb about Rice saying that troops wouldn't be used to escort Iraqi kids to kindergarten, then a picture of them doing that cropped up! I hope the Dems run split screens of the misAdmin's lies and reality. Bunch of punks.

2. I break the NASCAR stereotype
1. Chick
2. Vote Democratic
3. Financially moderate, culturally liberal
4. Not really pro-gun. I have my own opinions about the Second Amendment that would take a whole post to elaborate upon...
5. I have all my teeth

But, I do love the smell of hot asphalt and the roar of the huge, throbbing motors. RRROW!

Great post--this is the basis of how Bush will go down in 2004. He's out of control. The old-school Repubs have been pushed to the shadowy fringes of the party but they're coming back. There will be a schism, and one of our very worthy candidates will come out the victor. (Except for Lieberman. Henceforth, when I mention our "worthy candidates," please assume he is excluded.)

5. Made me laugh!
No, and no. Sorry! I look silly in hats, and I gave up drinking a year ago after a particularly bad experience with tequila shots.

Actually, I've been a bit out of touch lately with the haps. I used to love Matt Kenseth. Hope he's still kicking ass!

11. Is "2003 NASCAR Winston Cup Champion" enough ass kicking for you?
He's either the recordholder or tied with him for "WC champion that won the fewest number of races in his championship season."

Matt Kenseth won the Winston Cup (the last one ever--next year it's the Nextel Cup) with one race win to his credit. He got the championship with a string of top-five/top-ten finishes.

He locked up the championship at Rockingham, went to Homestead for the last race of the season, and dropped out dead last with an oil pan malfunction. (A piston went through it.)

8. My husband, a Dem and NASCAR dad, will be happy to see this.
(SNIP)
NASCAR spokesman Terrence Burns says that of the one-third of all Americans who are NASCAR fans, 40 percent are women and 20 percent are minorities. Sixty percent live outside the Southeast and on average they are likely to be more affluent and have more children under the age of 18 than average Americans.

"If a Democrat wants these voters, he has to go after them on family issues," Howell says. "The candidate has to talk about family and talk about education and talk about helping the future of America. It is down home, mom, dad and apple pie."

Looks like there is room in NASCAR for Dems with growing viewership among women and people outside the south.

Thanks for the article!
