Justice for New Americans, a political action group based in California, raises consciousness among Asian Americans to struggle against being permanent foreigners. The internment camps of the 1940's should not be forgotten. Suspicion of Asians continues.
http://www.j4na.org/Wen Ho Lee, a scientist at Los Alamos, downloaded his working files to a floppy disk to avoid being interrupted when the network crashed, as it did frequently. Although the floppy never left the secure area, Wen Ho Lee was charged with espionage and thrown into solitary confinement for nine months. The "evidence" against him included his friendship with Chinese scientists, who in fact had been classmates. The case was eventually dropped.
More recently the government is determined to ruin the lives of Captain James Yee and his family. Unable to substantiate a case of espionage against him, the American government now accuses him of adultery and downloading pornography. Because this is such a high profile case, these absurd charges were approved at the highest levels, perhaps by George Bush himself.
Apparently, Asians are not perceived as human beings in the same sense as white people. General Westmoreland justified his killing rampages in Vietnam by claiming that the Vietnamese don't place the same value on human life.
Justice for New Americans tries to dissuade Asian Americans from thinking of themselves as the "model minority". Being quiet and law-abiding is simply not enough to achieve equality in America.
