Ugh.. Bush approval rating up to 61% after Iraq stunt
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/news/archive/2003/12/02/national1730EST0659.DTL

President Bush's standing with the public has improved since his surprise Thanksgiving trip to Iraq amid signs of a stronger economy and following congressional passage of a prescription drug benefit under Medicare.

Bush's job approval was at 61 percent in the National Annenberg Election Survey conducted the four days after the holiday, up from 56 percent during the four days before Thanksgiving. Disapproval of the president dropped from 41 percent to 36 percent, according to the poll released Tuesday.

Bush visited the troops in Baghdad on Thanksgiving -- a move that even won praise from political opponents.

Public opinion about Bush personally also improved during the four-day, post-holiday span, with an increase in the number who view him favorably from 65 percent to 72 percent. Republicans shifted from 83 percent with a favorable view of Bush personally to 94 percent. Democrats moved from 46 percent to 55 percent.

3. These seem to be rather spurious poll results

I had never seen him @ 56% approval rating anywhere recently - most polls showed 50-52% or thereabouts.

55% of Democrats favorable? That's delusional.

6. nothing surprises me anymore
We have assholes like Zell Miller and 10 other DINO's in the senate siding with Bush on medicare. Unfortunately, I don't think DU represents the views of most democrats. Half of them are probably moderate/conservatives and they might not find Bush that objectionable. <shudder>

18. DU
is ahead of the curve. Think about it. Think about the numerous inconceivable, whacky, outlandish notions that you first read about here, only to see them seep into the mainstream months later. The debunking of Powell's UN presentation comes to mind. Refuted point by point here on DU within days of the presentation. Refuted point by point by the associated press in July.

Of course Bush will get a bump from his Iraq trip. He'll get more help from the "good" economic news. But, I'm not worried. Why? Because it's Bush, for God's sake. He'll take care of himself.

10. Not very. It's the "core" or "base" - not the "mushy middle"
Just look at the polls here like "would you support Hillary if she ran in 2004?" It was almost universally "NO!" (which surprised me a little, though I don't think she should run either). Actual polls of Democratic primary voters show her WAY out in front if she got in the race.

Then look at the high percentage of people who put Dean way at the bottom of their "support" list yet he is the clear leader. Or the non-existent support for Lieberman when the polls show him in the middle of the pack or above.

Lastly, it seems pretty clear that Kucinich has STRONG support HERE, but he's fighting with two non-candidates for last place in the real world.

If DU was indicative of the whole party we would never win an election. Just read some of the conspiracy theories in the 9/11 threads on how the towers were taken out to see an example. We represent from the core left of the party into the "fringy left" with only a few of the center-left people who haven't been tombstoned as "closet freepers".

JM2c :-)

12. Yes, that poll seems to be skewed in a positive direction. Is it Repug?
I simply don't believe there are that many brain dead Americans who are capable of answering the phone coherently and/or responding through e-mail.

8. Who cares? All polls are somewhat suspect....
it will be back down in another one...I'll never forget that the polls had Bush winning the popular vote before 2000...and they also had the Dems winning seats in the 2002 election...after that I began to seriously question their validity...

the only thing that matters is general trends...and one poll does not a general trend make....

The previous Anneberg poll, which had Bush at 56%, reportedly, was substantially higher than other polls of the same period:

Annenberg
11/23-26/03: 56%

Ipsos-Public Affairs/Cook Political Report
11/18-20/03: 50%

CNN/Time Poll
11/18-19/03: 52%

FOX News/Opinion Dynamics Poll
11/18-19/03: 52%

20. Well, there is some good in this
Hey, at least no one had to die for Bush's ratings to go up again.

It could have been another "imminent threat", another "terrorist attack", maybe another war...

But fortunately that wasn't necessary this time around.
