What Happens in a DRAFT (coming soon to a home near you) - SSS site
http://www.sss.gov/seq.htm

SEQUENCE OF EVENTS

Here is a brief overview of what would occur if the United States returned to a draft:

1. CONGRESS AND THE PRESIDENT AUTHORIZE A DRAFT
A crisis occurs which requires more troops than the volunteer military can supply. Congress passes and the President signs legislation which starts a draft.

2. THE LOTTERY
A lottery based on birthdays determines the order in which registered men are called up by Selective Service. The first to be called, in a sequence determined by the lottery, will be men whose 20th birthday falls during that year, followed, if needed, by those aged 21, 22, 23, 24 and 25. 18-year-olds and those turning 19 would probably not be drafted.

3. ALL PARTS OF SELECTIVE SERVICE ARE ACTIVATED
The Agency activates and orders its State Directors and Reserve Forces Officers to report for duty. See also Agency Structure.

4. PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND MORAL EVALUATION OF REGISTRANTS
Registrants with low lottery numbers are ordered to report for a physical, mental, and moral evaluation at a Military Entrance Processing Station to determine whether they are fit for military service. Once he is notified of the results of the evaluation, a registrant will be given 10 days to file a claim for exemption, postponement, or deferment. See also Classifications.

5. LOCAL AND APPEAL BOARDS ACTIVATED AND INDUCTION NOTICES SENT
Local and Appeal Boards will process registrant claims. Those who pass the military evaluation will receive induction orders. An inductee will have 10 days to report to a local Military Entrance Processing Station for induction.

6. FIRST DRAFTEES ARE INDUCTED
According to current plans, Selective Service must deliver the first inductees to the military within 193 days from the onset of a crisis.

1. Addendum
7. Young Republicans line up at the draft boards with bullshit excuses: pimple on their ass, "bad knees", too fat, Daddy gave a big check to the Bush campaign.

Step 8? Depends on who sits on those draft boards!

4. I tried to get on, but it appears they don't want me.
Might as well try to get some working class people.

I would really like to see who is chosen by them to serve. Especially the median income.

7. I think a lot of young men should start coming
out of the closet just about now...To show a history and pattern of behavior.

5. fuck the draft...
really. To this young boy it isn't about getting rich peoples kids into a battlefield... it is about going to war.

You cannot draft me... I will not kill anyone. You can draft my girlfriends brother who gets a hardon thinking about guns. Or the rich kid who does the same. But not the rich kid who opposes war or I.

In a Democracy I am forced to kill people of other nations? C'mon.

8. Hope
that the draft will never be used again in our lifetime...it is the quickest way to destroy the military, through degredation of its moral and good order and discipline. We cannot aford to lose one fourth of our national power (the others being diplomacy, information, and economy)

12. I would venture to say the other three you listed are already history
And the Military is being decimated as we speak. How many Reserves will re-up? I think people will think long and hard about joining the Guard now that they are used as Active Duty soldiers instead of National Guardsmen. So basically all four of your National Power base are suspect at this moment in history.

13. I grew up believing
Edited on Wed Dec-03-03 11:24 AM by m-jean03
that the draft could never happen again, that it was illegal. Up until recently I was convinced that the draft & Vietnam was the product of a more primitive and unjust era. What do you all think? Have we grown to a point that this could never happen? Or have I been naive, living all my life in the feel-good 80s and 90s, much like the 1950s, whose innocence was destroyed by 'nam?

I am suddenly aware of the mandatory military service imposed by so many other governments, and a 60% approval rating for Bush...could a horror like a draft/death lottery really return?
