Poll question: How many were at your MoveOn.Org event tonight?
Edited on Sun Dec-07-03 10:07 PM by WhoCountsTheVotes
Did you attend? How many people at your meeting? What did you think about the movie? Did you listen in on the conference call? Did you host? Where was your meeting, city, state? Did you think this is an effective way for the left to organize?

I was at one off Man O War. We had good food, good conversation, and great booze.
I was able to pass out some Black box voting material, including a CD I made.

Our crowd was small but rowdy. they yelled at the screen, laughed at the chimp, and booed Condi and Rummy.

We had a good discussion afterwards. I took a few images which I sent to the host. She will upload them to MoveOn.

I will put them on the web soon. I don't have an image of myself. I was behind the camera.

I did put in a plug for DU.

7. This one was held in a small community center
We were in the back and couldn't see the TV screen very well.

Nevertheless, it was an excellent documentary and I hope more people get to see it. The word should get out to the unconvinced but convincible.

3. great event
I attended the part at the Bowery Poetry club in New York City. We had a great turn out, (epecially for such bad weather, too)- I think there was well over 40 people. The movie was really informative and I hope there will be more people who will see it. The confrence call was hard to hear. Great event all around!!!

10. Dallas had great turnout at event sponsered by Young Dems!
Magnolia Lounge, 100+ people, there were candidates running for office, petitions being signed, generally great crowd.

The film was good. We should all buy copies and share with anyone and everyone we can. What I personally have seen over the course of the last few months are more people looking for answers. It is all about educating the masses, we have to be there to give them an alternative to the mainstream media they are feeding upon. The only way to accomplish that goal is to be out there at every event you can find where you have an opportunity to talk with people. Bottom line? YOU HAVE TO GET ACTIVE AND INVOLVED, IN SOME WAY, ONE PERSON, ONE DAY AT A TIME.

Anyway, moving on (giggle), tonight was great! Thank you Move On and the Dallas Young Dems!

11. around 70 at one of the events in Oakland
The film stuck to Iraq and the assurances made by the administration, and they had a cavalcade of credible government and intelligence officials who flat out countered everything Bush claimed in the lead up to the war.

In fact, with a decent examination of the data at hand, those that voted for the IWR did so KNOWING that Saddam was not the threat that Bush claimed. If they didn't then they should be fired...TODAY, not the next election cycle.

15. Hi, urbanhermit!
Welcome to D.U. :hi:

I checked in here right away, hoping to hear how that went at the Tivoli. Glad to hear they got good crowds. How did people respond?

I was at a small gathering in Lakewood, but it was a good group, and there were about 5 of us that stayed to the bitter end, determined to not let this drop, and carry further with some organizing. Those of us who stayed seemed to click, and I hope that it develops into something deeper.

Also turns out that all of us are Kucinich supporters (hurrah!), so we decided to put together a house party. Bigger Hurrah!

Do you know if there will be further action from the Tivoli groups? I'm really interested in knowing.

17. Thanks for the welcome
I've been here for long awhile, I'm just a shy lurker.

I was handing out Clark lit so I didn't get involved in the discusions. There was plenty of laughter and groaning in the theatre during the show.

There was one woman handing out Kucinich lit and one DK T-shirt. I talked to someone from the Dean campaign who also the director of Coloradoans for Voting Integrity. The voting group is meeting Tuesday if you're interested. I haven't checked out the site yet, but you can probably get more information from it.

Thanks for the info. I'll check it out.

I was thinking after I posted to you.... do you have any idea about the other groups that met locally, and if there were many people who wanted to continue getting together, as we did? I'm guessing it would be just a few from each group, so I'd really like to know if there is some way to link up with each other.

I was really wishing I had some Kucinich materials with me, too. sigh.... 20/20 hindsight. But, I have my eyes on that party, now. ^_^

19. Thanks again
To be honest, I didn't know this event was planned and that it was nationwide. I just got an e-mail asking for volunteers to hand out lit. I was surprised at the turn out and decided to look for it here when I got home. I know I networked with the Clark group more but I don't know if other people got together. We had about 12 people show, Dean had 2 and Kucinich 1. Besides me and another guy, I didn't see any camp really talking to each other. Participants really seemed interested in taking lit for each campaign though.

Indymedia did show up and take some pictures but I haven't seen it posted on their site yet.

Good night,

Mike

My wife and I were turned away at the door because there were no more seats or places to stand. Dozens of others were also turned away. We were disappointed, but glad they had such a large turnout in such a conservative area.

29. Inside the Beltway....20 people at a home showing....all the men
were Veterans, half the people had never protested at all, until THIS war...everybody had protested at least ONCE for the Iraq war...no 'draft' age young men got motivated enough to join us...all thought the draft is coming sooner than later, and especially since 'draft' age young men just don't care and it is real obvious that bush* will get away with it....all Veterans were clear that since young men don't care, they are definitely going to be drafted...if significant numbers of young 'draftable' men STOOD UP, it would be quite different...we were viewing this video about 2 miles from the Pentagoon....

the video is GREAT...everyone should get up and go see it...better idea...buy a few videos and circulate around your community...such action could save your life or the lives of those you love...buy the video for a holiday gift...tells the truth about this horrible Iraqi mess....spread the word...what better way to wish people 'peace on earth'....especially young people...get up and DO SOMETHING !!!

30. Standing room only!
I attended a small event hosted at a small tea house in St Paul. Capacity was 30; 40 or more showed up. It was wonderful to be surrounded by people who were aware, who had taken the steps to dig out information that the bush* administration and lap dog media would prefer to remain hidden.

The people in our group consciously avoided personal endordements of their particular favorite in the Dem Primaries, and the consensus at our group was to support the eventual Democratic nominee, but to also put the Dem party on notice that we are watching them, and that MOST were UNHAPPY with the Party for abandoning their base in favor of Corporatism!

BBVoting was also a HOT issue.

I am optimistic that we don't NEED the cooperation of BIG MEDIA to defeat the extremists now in Washington if we all do our part. These types of gatherings will be the foundation of the grassroots movement that will defeat bush*.

31. San Antonio, TX -- 70-80 people. Here's my report.
Our event was in San Antonio, Texas, and was attended by around 70-80 people, I would guess. Far too many for me to count, though. (Definitely more than 50; probably less than 100.)

I took my S.O., and we met a friend of ours there. We arrived a few minutes into the first showing, but we managed to find a couple chairs and saw the last 3/4 of the hour-long film. The film was quite well-done, I think. It methodically went through the case Bush presented in his State of the Union against Iraq, showing how virtually all of the claims he made in that speech have proven to be either extremely misleading or outright false. Then it did the same for Colin Powell’s speech to the U.N., and with the administration’s estimates of the cost of the war, beforehand and afterwards, and more. The juxtaposition of Bush/Cheney/Powell/Rumsfeld’s words before the war and after the war was an extremely effective presentation, I think. It closed with the string of intelligence experts interviewed decrying the administration’s attempts to discredit the patriotism of their critics.

After the film ended, our host gave a brief speech. He talked about how he, a lawyer (wearing a Howard Dean t-shirt), had spent two weeks in Palm Beach County during the 2000 Florida recount as a observer for the Democratic Party, and had personally witnessed our consitutional democracy being purposely undermined by our would-be President. He knew right from that moment that Bush would lie his way through his term in office. He also brought up an analogy with Germany in 1934 and wondered if we may be in the same situation now. He was encouraged, though, by the fact that more and more people are finally waking up to what is going on and starting to take action.

Then we broke briefly for snacks and refreshments and conversation. Later, they replayed the movie a second time, so those of us who missed the beginning were able to see it. They interrupted the second showing for the national conference call with the MoveOn organizers. The MoveOn staff introduced themselves briefly, and then there was an interview with the filmmaker, which lasted about 10 minutes or so. (I thought they said the questions/answers of that interview would be posted on the web site, but apparently that hasn’t happened yet, as I can’t find it. Soon, perhaps!)

After the conference call, a few individuals gave us their personal thoughts. A fellow who runs the local website for the Howard Dean campaign told us a story about going door-to-door. Apparently they are finding some people literally crying when they come to their doors, people who had health-care issues and had commented critically of Bush’s policies to their neighbors, were so glad to find a sympathetic group of people, as their Bush-loving neighbors could not stand a single word critical of their leader and had become verbally abusive. A woman told us of her experience going to Kuwait as a volunteer to help feed American soldiers (who apparently were scared and wanted to see American faces amongst those feeding them). Amongst other things, she felt betrayed to later find out the company they had offered their services to was a subsidiary of Halliburton.

We finally added our names, addresses, and emails to the list of attendees, chatted with a few more fellow progressives, and headed out. I am looking forward to more similar events in the future, and getting more involved with the grassroots efforts to take our government back.

This kind of event is the perfect vehicle for those of us who have not yet decided upon a candidate, or are otherwise hesistant to get involved in primary politics.

My S.O. and I are planning on ordering our own copy of this movie, and having our own house party in a few weeks, inviting many of our friends who weren't able to make this showing for some reason or other. I also plan to send copies to my family members out of town.

32. Thanks for reminding me..
...that there are/will be many who see this film who aren't aware of all that has taken place to bring us to where we are today. While I very much enjoyed the evening, my feeling was that it was, again, preaching to the choir, and most of us didn't learn anything we didn't already know. I also had the corrolary feeling that those who don't think Bushwa did anything wrong in going to war still won't change their minds by watching this. I hope you are right, and it will affect the thinking of many people.

We didn't have the conference call, so I'm hoping that it will be on the web soon.

Thanks again for your report!

33. Good points. Followup will be crucial.
I agree that last night's event was 'preaching to the choir'. That is why followup promotion of this film and the Bush administration lies it illustrates will be crucial to our efforts to oust Bush next year.

That is why we plan to have our own 'house party' down the road and why we plan to send out copies of this to friends and family members who are (at least currently) less involved in politics than ourselves.

If even a minority of those who attended do the same, the results will be amazing, I think.

:-)

39. Follow up
Unfortunately, I think that your approach to followup is about the only one that will work... person to person contact. Otherwise, people's eyes glaze over, and they walk away. I say it's unfortunate because it is sooo much more time-consuming to do it that way, and such an intense task.

Orrrrr, I guess the alternative is to drive a beeeg bus into each neighborhood, herd everyone out of their homes and into the bus, drive them to a theater for a showing of this film and make sure they are paying attention the whole time, and insist they discuss the complete impact of the film before they will be taken back home. Ve haf vays! ~~gigglesnort~~

I wish I could also afford to buy copies to share with people, but living on a fixed income just doesn't allow for that.

I applaud your efforts!

52. disagree....viewing the video was very important....it is the
beginning of the total internet and video communication that avoids the entire mainstream media (which is too much to change)...and the comments of viewers so far are very upbeat and optimistic at this approach, and many people learned a lot last night, even long time activists, and that is POWERFUL....this movie will be shown all over America, passed along as Christmas gifts, shown on in-store TV's and no windows will be broken...

all it only takes 1 %.....

so many have tried to diss MoveOn, and diss ANSWER, and diss Democratic Candidates, and degrade returning protestors....

it doesn't work...the opposition to bush* and his policies will continue to build, no matter how many try to discourage it....

66. Dissing? Discouraging?
"so many have tried to diss MoveOn, and diss ANSWER, and diss Democratic Candidates, and degrade
returning protestors...."

Umm, excuse me.... If you reread my post, I don't think you will find any "dissing" going on. I thought that I was among likeminded friends here, and could say what I was actually thinking, rather than the party line. I said nothing at all negative.. just that the video at this meeting was preaching to the choir. I don't think that's all that radical a statement, but if you are wanting to get your feathers all ruffled over something, I guess my post was as good as anything.

I've been in protests for a whole lotta years, and nobody has yet accused me of "dissing" them or their organizations, or their actions, so this takes me a bit by surprise.

Oh yeah, and the "broken windows" was a bit tongue-in-cheek, although if you've been paying attention to any of the news reports, you may have noticed that there is a definite increase in violence towards us protester-types. Actually, that was a topic of discussion in our group last night.... there are a lot of people who are looking at the increasing pressure against those of us who hae the nerve to speak up. It was good for everyone to be able to discuss this with a group of like-minded people, so I certainly hope you wouldn't be one to tell people not to discuss what's on their minds.

We also talked a lot about the need to stick together and support each other, because it's likely the times are going to get harder. So, I would suggest that rather than trying to "pick me off", you maybe realize that we're all in this together, and that I'm not saying anything that is in anyway threatening to you and the direction you are going. Support. Support. Support.

35. Excellent report, Peter!
But I would hardly expect anything less from you. ;-) It sounds like the film is definitely worth seeing. Is there a Web site where you can order a copy of this movie?

When I was in DC in October, I spent the afternoon in the Holocaust Museum and I was similarly struck by the parallels between Germany in the early '30s and what is taking place today.

I agree, though, that more people are waking up. Do they have a count yet on how many attended these parties nationwide?

The crucial point is what do we do know and where do we go from here. I do feel the momentum building.

Thanks for sharing your observations with us. :hi:

36. To order your own copy...
Here's where you can order a DVD copy ($15, it looks like): http://www.truthuncovered.com/

I don't know if they have any kind of offical count of the numbers. I suspect that a hard number will be hard to get, given the fact that there were something like close to 3,000 parties, but I also suspect that if they just total the number of registered attendees, that will be correct to within 25% or so.

I just noticed that MoveOn.org does have an interactive map showing where all the parties were held and has some pictures from some of them.

Thanks! :hi:

38. That interactive map is AMAZING!
How did they get that pulled together with all of the picture so quickly!?! They are an amazing organization. Thanks for the links (which I admit I probably could have found if I wasn't being so lazy. :P)

34. 27 registered, 50 turned up
The video was ok, but I already knew all that it revealed thanks to Democracy Now and KPFA. We need to get this out to the mainstream for it to make a difference.

Someone suggested we march on DC and demand Bush's resignation. I'd go...

37. Standing room only
175 (+ -) people in Davis, California. Video was well received, but then that was expected. Talk of getting message and video out to a bigger crowd. Local public access TV guy suggested showing Uncovered and having a panel discussion group on afterward (good idea). How to get younger people involved. How to fire up the fence sitters. All positive ideas with one consensus - DUMP SHRUB! One idea struck home - get information out to general public but have something of substance (positive) to replace/repair it...

Iraqi citizen in attendance and thanked the crowd for interest and support.

Sign-up to borrow three tapes and DVD available, sign-up for future gatherings.

Kucinich supporters well represented and with reading material offered.

Local Democratic Party represented

Music store owner wants to play Uncovered on continous loop mode on his shop's TV as though it's the news broadcast and has admitted that he has done the same with other material (hey, it beats Fox news).

All in all, a 'big tent' gathering that will get bigger.

WOW! That's great.

Hope he doesn't get rocks thrown through his windows. ^_^

51. what part of video encouraged violence toward store owners?

certainly, if I saw the video shown at a store, I would walk in and buy something there...and encourage others to do the same, recommend that shop to my friends and neighbors....

was there something in the video that you feel encourages violence?
I didn't see that part...please explain what you saw that encourages criminal actions like breaking windows in stores? IMHO, it is NOT great to throw rocks into windows...such actions are crimes...

I am going to encourage all shop owners in my neighborhood to show this video on their in-store TV's....I spend money in my local stores, and I am personal friends with some owners...I will encourage the viewing of this video everywhere....so many people will be PROUD that they helped bring out the TRUTH....

quoting your words:

".......has admitted that he has done the same with other material
WOW! That's great.
Hope he doesn't get rocks thrown through his windows."

43. Hundreds and hundreds
We had it at a place called Ringside in Durham. FOUR story bar with every TV tuned to the movie, and on the fourth floor a big screen TV in a lounge. We had nowhere to stand. Hundreds and hundreds of people came. I'm getting two DVD's this week from the site. Pass them on!

I was very excited to meet other progressives right in my neighborhood (I live in a middle - upper middle class area where most people are quiet about their politics). It's a great documentary by the way.

19 people all thanked the hostess and didn't feel alone anymore. It's good for people to realize there are people, powerful people who feel the same way they do and that there is plenty of evidence to support it.

53. I had five friends in my tiny NYC living room
It was preaching to the choir but I will loan the tape out to others and hope it gets played until it is worn out.

I found a lot of people who expressed interest when I first invited them found they had better things to do when Sunday actually rolled around. I noticed that MoveOn warned in their guidelines to expect the kind of response I got - maybe 20% of those invited showed. I sort of wish I had attended one of the events with big crowds. Sounds like fun!

54. 100% of people who signed up, showed up at home-showing
inside the Beltway....there were NO young 'draftable' men who signed up...sadly, too many of the currently posted photos show few young, and mostly middle-aged and seniors....that's is why the draft is being implemented as we chat here...if young 'draftable' people were STANDING UP right now, the draft would be on the 'back burner' and not on the 'FRONT BURNER' as it is today...

there seems to be very little activism against this war, coming from the draftable people...silence is acceptance of the war/draft....silent is complicity....

Me and 2 other Austin area DUers who shall remain nameless *coughGOPisEvilcoughflush_bushcough* were planning to go but decided at the last minute to bail out and just hung out around a friend's house instead.

59. You had 21 choices in Austin, too ;-)
We only had 3 here in San Antonio. What's up with that? (Of course, who am I to speak? ... we didn't volunteer to be a host. That could have made 4.)

Of course, I see Chicago only had 5. So perhaps San Antonio doesn't look so bad after all. Austin is just off the charts.

And of course you still can order the film, invite everyone you know, and have your own party later!

64. there are many notes on this thread about no-shows...and IMO
Edited on Mon Dec-08-03 07:03 PM by amen1234

that's exactly what will happen with the upcoming 2004 elections...lots of 'draftable' young people will not show up to vote (as in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003)...it's a real pattern so far, in the war protests, both pre-war and post-'mission accomplished', the videos, the activism....missing-in-action are 'draftable' people's protest songs, theatre, signs, new ideas, artwork, poetry, protests....it's sad to hear our young 'draftees' just singing the old Vietnam protest songs with a change in the war name...and so many old Vietnam people made their lifelong careers by STANDING UP, as writers, singers, actors/actresses, politicians, poets, artists, and more, works that live on to this very day...so it could not only save your lives, but also create your career....fame and fortune awaits the young 'draftable' people who can fill the void....

in the memorable words of Woody Allen "99% of success is just SHOWING UP".....

my hope is that 'draftable' people will wake up soon, because I haven't seen their full participation yet, rather just a few, and if that doesn't come forward quickly now....their world is gone....going going going like sheep to the slaughter....

58. We had a small gathering in our home
Edited on Mon Dec-08-03 06:42 PM by truthseeker1
in Hollywood - had 25 respond and 10 show up. Still, even with 10, it was a very good crowd. Everyone was interested - a few were newbies so it wasn't completely preaching to the choir. We showed both Uncovered AND Unprecedented - a double feature. It was really exciting to watch the reactions of a few of the "newbies" - we knew the documentary was powerful when we saw its effect on them. One was really pissed halfway through Unprecedented. We kept pausing it to discuss.

The list of interviewees for Uncovered was so impressive. Before the movie even got underway - it listed the 20 or so prominent people who were interviewed for the movie - and people were saying WOW, this is going to be incredible! It was so great how Greenwald compared the statements made by the Bushies - showed how they all stayed on message (great marketing, great PR*...that's what the Dems need to do a better job of!) and then compared their pre-war statements to their revised statements later (nuclear weapons became nuclear weapons "programs", etc. etc.).

The conference call was a little disappointing. It was definitely cool to be connected with the other 2600+ house parties and to hear a few words from Robert Greenwald, but they only had time for a few questions and the questions they chose weren't that compelling.

But all in all, a great evening and everyone was so appreciative and glad to be a part of a group that is concerned and taking action. None of us are the "typical" activist and few of us (if any) ever protested before this year.

We now have a few more "core" members of our little group. We plan to continue having house parties in the next year to continue bringing new people into the fold and making them aware of what's really going on and of how it important it is to stop Bush in '04.

***Oh, one more note.....one of our friends who came - his brother is a 29-year old army captain who just found out he'll be taking his unit to Tikrit. This is the first time he has ever questioned (to himself of course) the true purpose of this conflict. He had thought he was going to Afghanistan and could have felt good about that mission, but he's having serious misgivings about going to Iraq. And his "boys" - the 18-20 year olds in his unit - are just so green he says. They should have a lot more training and they've had to get it all accelerated in a short two-month timeframe. Anyway, we all joined in telling our friend that we would keep his brother and his unit in our thoughts and prayers. The Iraq quagmire is beginning to hit home for so many.

*on edit: I'm not praising their lies...just recognizing that they're darned good at their *methods* of staying consistent with their lies and keeping everyone on message

61. Oh wow, you HAVE to get a copy and watch it!
It's another Greenwald documentary on the stolen election...
Here's a link: http://unprecedented.org/

Check it out!

Also, someone earlier in this thread mentioned they couldn't afford to buy copies for everyone......HEY EVERYONE! Robert Greenwald ENCOURAGES that we make copies of the film!! He doesn't care! He just wants lots and lots of people to see it. If you know anyone who has a DVD burner, get them to burn some copies for you. Of course, supporting the filmmakers by buying however many copies you can afford is a good idea too :-)

63. About 25 in Oakland CA
Edited on Mon Dec-08-03 07:00 PM by beam_me_up
I don't know the exact number, 25 to 30 people came. It got a bit confusing as a couple people called to cancel but some other people who weren't registered did come. We watched the documentary projected as well as on TV monitors. Everyone brought lots of food and deserts. Afterward we sat around and talked. Very interesting discussion concerning how the Bush Administration's policies are harming our country and what we must do to bridge various political divisions so we can come together to defeat Bush in 04.

After the discussion some stayed later while we watched Greg Palast's "Unprecedented"--about how the election of 2000 was stolen in Florida. This documentary in some ways is even more shocking that MoveOn's "Uncovered" and reveals how the entire Bush Presidency from the 'selection 2000' through 9/11 right up to the present is nothing but lies and deception.

Enjoyed hosting this event and hope to do others like it again. If you live in the SF Bay area and would be interested in joining us, send me a private message.

ON EDIT PS: I asked the group if any of them were DU members. No one knew what I was talking about so I gave a general description of this place and suggested everyone check it out.

65. We had 35-40 people in Kent, Washington
One of about 70 meetings in the greater Seattle region. Great discussion following the video on what we can do to get out the vote, and energize the non-voters. We had a couple of very young people there too, one who will just barely be eligible to vote next November; that was good to see.
