1. Well, perhaps you should take into account
your control group?

5. I think you mean "sample group" -- there is no control group
And by that definition, it is a highly subjective survey.

2. If the media will shill for * in the General Election
then does it really matter who our nominee is?

For the primary, I'm trying to ignore the media spin & go right to the source material - speeches, platform. BUT I am paying attention to how the candidates respond to attacks.

As for Dean, there are just as many hit pieces as fluff pieces - kinda cancels itself out. He's just getting more press period b/c he's the front runner & has a "hook".

3. Fair enough.
I'm sure there are some folks who want Dean because they think he will be easy to beat.

I happen to think they are wrong though...

4. these daily polls are fun and
I've done my share of them too, but the only poll on DU I really trust is when the site itself conducts the poll and it is locked in at the top of the page for 48 hours or so and you get a better reading of sentiment as well as more respondents.

The almost daily polls on candidate sentiment I've stopped participating in because while they are fun to do every so often they become meaningless when done every day, imo--plus people look at who is conducting them and if they think it is a supporter of a certain campaign I think many people will just pass 'em up.

7. Regardless of what the polls say, ours or theirs....
I think we can use our own eyes and our own minds to see that they are trying to affect the outcome of the primary. No doubt, Dean is a very popular candidate. However, not one vote has been cast yet. No one knows who will come out of the primary process. But to listen to the media, it is a given that Dean is the choice.

8. These polls are amusing but they don't mean anything at all
Edited on Mon Dec-08-03 12:10 PM by depakote_kid
because the data's riddled with response & nonresponse bias. So don't get serious on us. Just have fun with it! B-)

9. Media support as a contrarian indicator?
So...if the media attacks Saddam Hussein...we should support him?

Who gets to determine the positive statements by the media that should be deemed wrong?

Hmmm...looks like total subjectivity to me...

11. Good question Pete....
There is also a self-interest indicator. To compare Saddam with the candidates and the upcoming election is comparing apples and oranges.
Does the poster think your "total subjectivity" is an indicator of total objectivity by the media? If not, it is all opinion.

12. No but a blanket statement that media support means you shouldn't
Support the candidate seems foolish to me at best.

Why not engage one's own brain and ignore media coverage that's irrelevant?

14. I think the actual content of the press material is much more useful...
Than simply whether someone is being covered or not.
