Now asking about Clark's thoughts on 9-11.

158. His opening was a little shaky...
I could tell he was a little nervous before he found hi 'spot'.

That happens a lot with Tweety, because you're never really sure what his 'bow shot' will be.

Took about 3 min's for Clark to dominate completely. There was no turning back once he knew he was not gonna be blindsided.

36. For those who can't see..
the Saddam quote is that someone told Clark after September 11th.. "9/11--Saddam Hussein--if he didn't do it, he should have, cause we're going to get him anyways." He's telling it to illustrate how they were planning to go after Iraq while we were still in Afghanistan.

134. Important Reason for the Hague

Clark says trying Bin Laden in the Hague will be good for our relations with other countries - Laden's trial/conviction will have credibility with other countries - allies and others. If we try Bin Laden here, proceedings will be suspect.

This is a great point, and dovetails into how Clark will restore our standing in the world.

163. You are so right...
When I was watching last night that's all I could think. I really like Dean, but he allowed Matthews to control the conversation, to ask multiple questions and interrupt him, and most importantly, he provided the conservative talk show nation with a sound bite that paints him as a draft dodger.

Clark just showed what Matthews really is: a stupid talking head with a list of "gotcha" questions. Did you notice how, when Clark refused to provide terse soundbytes, but instead went into great detail about his retirement, that Matthews looked bored as bored as a 12 year-old in a retirement home? Matthews doesn't want detail or logic. He wants, obviously, to rankle the candidates and trip them up with loaded questions. Clark was too smart to let him do that. He made Matthews look like the fucking moron he is. I was very impressed by the General.

135. Well I waited to post until after the show, my take
Edited on Mon Dec-08-03 08:28 PM by Jim4Wes
The audience gave Clark a rousing welcome.

Clark started out very coolly and cleverly, "I don't care about endorsements,...unless they're for me." I love that line.

The main thing to take away from this debate is really how well Clark performs against an interviewer trying to trip him up. Clark controlled the interview for the most part. Although Matthews was particularly stubborn trying to force his own perception on us as is the typical pundit method these days.

Matthews wouldn't stop repeating questions about Clark's forced retirement. Clark went into detail and characterized it as a political power play, and Clinton did not know what had happened until after the story was leaked.

Clark delivered his standard attack on Bushie, good job.

A little on domestic policy, taxes, gay marriages, tweeties favorite topic.

This was a good performance by Clark, hope America was watching!

143. At least on foreign policy, Clark is the most genuinely interesting
Unfortunately on domestic issues, he still has to fall back on verbatim talking points "equal rights under the law", "jobs creation program," "I believe in Roe v. Wade", "I believe in affirmative action." He's a truly exceptional person. His intelligence is fascinating to listen to. He reminds more of Kennedy than any candidate since Bobby. Even if he loses the nomination, what a great Sectretary of State or Defense. It's great that this campaign, if nothing else, has rescued Clark from his obscurity in Little Rock.

152. About Clark and Domestic Policy
It is very rare, so rare in fact that I can not remember it happening, when Clark is given more than 45 or so seconds to addresse any domestic issue other than a hot button cultural one, like Gay marriages or flag burning, when he is being interviewed on TV. He is either asked to talk about "mistakes" his campaign made, his thoughts about Dean, slurs against him, or gotcha attempts to catch him in past flip flops, or, or, just maybe, Iraq.

Clark's domestic postiions are increasingly well thought out and detailed. I urge you to review Clark's "Turnaround Plan for America" which not only is detailed, but also provides specific measurements to hold Clark accountable.

Clark is a much better candidate, and will make a better President. We have to keep fighting. I still like Clark, Edwards and Kerry miles better than Dean. And since MOST of us don't like someone trying to "select" the winner, we should just keep on fighting for what we think is right.

I noticed he seemed a bit off kilter when someone strong wont let him lead them. Clark showed the world that he is a fair man that can be a force when the situation presents itelf.

Compare that with Dean who lets reporters lead him around by the nose. Big difference and its shows who has leadership traits.

144. I know this will sound arrogant
But now is the time for supporters of Democratic candidates other than Clark or Dean to decide which of those two men they would rather have as the nominee. There is no one other than Clark who can inspire the degree of passion needed to sufficiently fire up enough supporters to stand up to the support and money that Dean has mustered. Clark inspires confidence, he projects strength and clarity. He can be incredibly forceful one moment and completely disarming the next. The rest of the Democratic field had over a year to prove themselves against Dean, and they had incredible advantages to begin with. They failed.

Clark is still winning people over with his commen sense and intellectual fire power, he is obviously a man able to take command of a situation, and he took command of Mathews. At one point, I think it was during the "gay marriage" baiting, Mathews kept reframing his question with new prefaces and Clark said "I was prepared to answer your question the first time before you asked it again."

Clark joked duing Hardball about how campaigning is an art form, which he is now learning rapidly, but leadership requires a different set of skills which he has practiced throughout his life. When Clark talks about that it is obvious that he isn't just making a speech. What amazes me is how quickly he is mastering campaigning also. Take your choice, Dean or Clark. Ain't gonna be anyone else.

145. Excellent analysis.
It is the decisive time to see who's in it for their own ego and whose in it for the good of the country. It's time to focus the beam.

157. It does sound a bit premature...
The time will come soon enough when supporters of candidates in the single digits will have to make a decision. Let's not push it. Too many ecstatic Deanies are "pushing" the issue right now with "the train is leaving the station--get on board-- you lost" comments. Let's not make the same mistake by pushing the supporters of the other candidates.

Though I agree with much of what you are saying--some of the Deanies are really pissing me off with their arrogance--so we need to show more respect for the other candidates and their supporters.

. I really liked Gore better as an elder statesman--apparently he isn't old enough for the role yet. This is not statesman like on his part..

146. Almost an hour after Hardball...
and I'm still jumpiong inside!

Heads up for those that couldn't watch, nutshell:

Clark came out to great appaluse and reception, took Tweety off center.

Was honest and truthful in answering questions. No real 'sound-bites', but real explanations, and answers to questions.

After the first 3 minutes, he was firmly in control, and Tweety knew it!

Clark did not trip up or fall into any traps...he did his homework, and did it well.

Tweety hit on some hard questions, ie, gay marriage, and Wes handled them beautifully, (Equal Rights Under the Law!)

If you get a chance watch the replay, it will move you. If not, there is no way a transcript can show you how intense Clark was, but if you looked at the audience at Harvard, you could see in EVERY face, that this man had the room in his control!

It was a great night for Dems everywhere!!!! I bet Rove is choking on his tie, and Cheney is on his way to CCU! (bush is still listening to the story Pickles is trying to explain to him since noon).

O8)

147. Okay, someone want to tell me
Clark claims he is the better choice because, although he has no experience politically, or in governing, he is a proven leader(military), though the point was made that there are unavoidable concerns regarding his leadership record. How is the question of his claim compromised by issues of "forced retirement" or rash decisions made at Pristina?

151. Al Franken would be proud
1. SACEUR is a political/diplomatic position as much as a military one
2. You mention political experience - No he's not a cockroach
3. He provides proven foreign policy leadership
4. Forced Retirement meme - Lies espoused by BFEE/PNAC
5. Pristina Airfield meme - http://www.clarkmyths.com/myth4.html

164. Sorry
He couldn't adequately answer it on Hardball. There is just too much lack of substance or depth on the issues, too many corporate connections and dealings, too many questions about his military performance, too many connections to the DLC wing.

159. FWIW
Recently someone at one after a speech said to Clark: You're going on Hardball; don't let Matthews push you around.

Clark replied: Matthews won't push me around, I'll be in the same room with him.

Also, up thread someone commented on Clark having done his homework. On foreign policy, Clark would be acting as anyone else's advisor. Yes, domestic issues instead of Shelton would be a relief.

Off to read David Hume. An interesting choice...a philosopher of the Enlightenment.

160. I talked to some people who were in the audience for Hardball
They were talking about what was going on during the commercial breaks. Tweety was making his annoying comments, criticizing Clinton, of course. Meanwhile, Clark was walking around shaking hands with the students. (Majority of the seats were given to students.)

I was with some other folks holding up Clark signs outside before the show started. When Clark walked by us on his way to the show, he thanked us for being there.

I watched the show in a bar with other Clark supporters, and we all thought he did great on the show. We did a lot of cheering for his answers. I loved it when he mentioned PNAC, and I also loved the way he'd throw things back in Tweety's face (much like he did on that Fox interview). I truly believe that Clark has what it takes to both win the White House and save our country from the damage the bush* cabal has done to it.

162. Thanks everybody for the play by play
I am sorry I missed it. Sure would've loved to see the General hand Tweety his ass.

I really think the General and the Doctor are going to be on the ticket. I hope the haterz from both camps get it together soon.

Rock on General!
