I vote yes.
it's no less a major boost for Dean.
edit: guffaw! what's with me skipping over words like that. "Dean and Clark in STATISTICAL DEAD according to latest Pew Poll!"

19. What's the sense in endorsing if it isn't going to influence votes? |
|
He is endorsing so that he can sway votes.

Now when he endorses the winner, if it's not Dean, it won't have the same punch. IMO

9. it wouldn't have been a punch... |
|
because as a Democrat, it is expected that Al Gore would endorse the winner. This was not expected.

It's just a bunch of crybabies voting yes. Honestly, they would find no issue if Gore said "I'm for Clark" or "I'm for Kerry" or, Hell, "I'm for Moseley Braun."
Later.

The question should be, should Al Gore have endorsed ANYONE?
I don't think he should have. He should have done a Hillary and said that he'd support whichever of the nine Democrats gets the nomination, because each one of them is a million times better than Junior.

12. i went with undecided |
|
i dont think it's easy to say. On one hand, i think it obviously helps Dean (duh). He'll get a lot of money, it'll help make him 'safe' for party insiders to endorse, and it'll draw in the undecided voters who havent been paying attention (add the lieberman guys to that group in the polls... imo a lot of lieberman voters aren't really lieberman supporters, they're leftovers from 4 years ago)
But if that help takes Leibpharry out of the race earlier (rather than seeing them stick longer due to the primary dates) then it will likely gell the anti-dean vote into one candidate.
By putting Dean in front, it will likely make him the target of the attacks by all but Clark (it seems Clark is betting he's going to be the alternative candidate and taking the high road, for now) - so the likelyhood of sniping between camps makes it less and less likely of easily converting those voters as their candidates drop. If they drop earlier, and have a lowered opinion of dean, it could hurt him.
I still think it nets positive, but i'm not sure it wouldnt have been more effective if it happened a couple weeks from now.

|
Rather than AFTER the front runner emerges. Finally some democrats with spines who are willing to take positions before they run a poll to make sure it's popular.
Good for Gore... and Dean.

22. This is like the british Conservative leader elections |
|
in some ways, there is something going on here that we were not privey to.
I'll take a shot.
The Democratic party decided they needed the maximum amount of time to campaign against bush* as possible.
The primary season was started very early and who was in the lead in october was going to be declared the winner by Gore. Then Clark joined the election a bit late, but made an early impression, so they put back the winning time a couple of months.
So now what happens is all the candidates pull out and Dean is declared the winner and it's chocs away for going at bush* for nearly an entire year.
Possibly but don't bet on it.

23. The Timing was Just Perfect |
|
Gore has a vested interest in our future.
Like me, he wants to see the BEST Democrat win in the primaries.
That means the candidate who is the most progressive, forward thinking, creative and just damn smart.
Gore wants the best for America.
THAT is why he endorsed Dean, why it was the right thing to do and why the timing was right: he forecloses the impact of a Clinton endorsement of Clark and dfraws a line in the sand against the DLC.
RIGHT ON AL! Thank You!!!
and God Bless.
Al Gore for UN Ambassador!!!
