What does Gore mean by "keep your eye on the prize?"
Is he telling the other campaigns to quit? I don't follow this.

If I am John Edwards or John Kerry, the prize is my butt seated behind the big desk in The Oval Office. The prize is not Howard Dean in the White House and me back sitting in on committee meetings on food additives.

Isn't this like telling USC to be happy if LSU beats Oklahmoa?

1. the prize is having a Democrat replacing Bush.
It isn't just about the individual candidates.

6. So. . .
I spend a gazillion dollars and waste a year of my life eating deep-fried pickles in the freezing cold in Iowa and New Hampshire . . . and I'm supposed to stop attacking the guy in the lead already?

Why didn't Gore keep his eye on the prize when he was eviscerating Michael Dukakis in '88?

22. Gore's advice is good......
Edited on Tue Dec-09-03 12:07 PM by virtualobserver
None of the candidates can beat Dean or Bush by attacking Dean or each other.

And unless those deep-fried pickles are hallucinogenic, the candidates should all know that by now.

2. My interpretation
of the "prize" is the White House. As in candidates and their supporters might want to tone down the rhetoric against the other Democratic candidates and perhaps focus more on their own positive message.

3. I think he means that the object is to get
Bush out of the White House.

Sure, go ahead and support your favorite candidate now, but when the Democrats nominate their candidate, back him.

Or not. And then you get Bush.

7. This morning
they read a quote from Gore who said that the reason he was doing this so we could unite now and thereby create a better fundraising effort. Thanks Al. Oh, and in the short time I've been on line today, I caught a post from the Daily Kos advising us that it was cool not to have a primary. To just let Al Gore pick someone out.

So it has some to this. No vote, no voice. And a place called Democratic Underground has people advocating that I don't have a vote.

Thanks Al.

What the hell does a Gore endorsement have to do with
your vote?

It is this simple---Gore carries a lot of weight in the party and he has participated and kept the heat on through his own eforts through MoveOut. He is to be commended while the Clinton's waffled or glossed over the 16 words or defended their support of Bush's Iraq mission.

Gore adds fuel to Dean's campaign and other campaign supporters are bitterly jealous of the boost it lends to Dean.

9. Dean?
In the White House?

McCafferty, who has been very critical of the regime lately, reading scathing emails about the junta, kept saying: Dean is who the WH wants you to run....Dean is who the WH wants you to run!
The poor man sounded desperate. I know I am.

Thanks Al...first you failed to fight for me; then you stole my vote.

18. funny
Al has made me feel quite disenfranchised about this primary. Why did I volunteer so many hundreds of hours for him? Why did I go all the way to DC to protest at the inaugural (though there was more to that) I find his endorsement and the manner of his comments this am very..I can't find the word...big headed?

20. Perhaps he's talking about public service,
rather than just "my butt seated behind the big desk in the Oval Office." Perhaps he's talking about the tone of the campaigns, along the lines of let's not do the GOP's dividing for them. It's a positive statement. Why does everything have to be negative?

Hell, I remember the 2000 primary. I know what kind of campaigner Gore is. The prize was always victory for Al Gore. Now, he is suddenly a stateman.

29. Everyone vote for who you want
Even if Dean wins the primaries, feel free to write in Clark or Kerry or Edwards or Mickey Mouse. Who cares who you vote for, besides yourself?

Gore's endorsement means something to many people who voted for Gore in 2000. Kristofferson's endorsement means nearly zilch to anyone who wasn't voting for Clark already. But, as Kerry says, this is an election. We are going to count votes, not endorsements. If Clark or Kerry get more votes than Dean, guess what? They win!

If you really feel that the media is telling you who to vote for, I heard that wrapping your head in tinfoil can block those subliminal media messages.

30. I feel like somewhat of an expert on the meaning of the phrase.
Seriously, to me it means no matter who you support there is only one goal, electing a Democrat. If that Democrat is Dean, Clark, Edwards or my grandmother, it is what has to happen.

Gore may also have been saying he supports Dean because he can lead to the prize, or he may have been saying the primary will be over and there should be no more fighting.

I doubt it was intended to insult anyone.

31. Amazing how Gore was God on Earth...
...and then he supports a candidate (LIKE HE SAID HE WOULD DO AT THE NYU AND MOVEON.ORG SPEECHES), and now he's lower than dirt. He means to remember that Bush out is what WE want. Campaign against each other, but don't tear each other to pieces.

ISN'T BUSH OUT OF THE WHITE HOUSE WHAT WE WANT ANYMORE?

Later.

33. Funny
but didn't Bill Clinton say the same thing at the Harkin steak fry? I remember the story about how Democrats want to fall in love, but Republicans just want to fall in line. He said very explicitly that to beat Bush, we Democrats would eventually have to fall in line.

Why is it such an outrage now that Al Gore said it?
