60 Minutes Story, is there a thread on it?
I was jsut talking to a co-worker and apparently "60 Minutes" ran a very critical story about Iraq and how we are screwing it up. Part of the story was about how one town in Iraq had placed a civil government in place all by themselves, then the U.S. Army came in, removed the gov't and placed their own person in power as the police chief...this guy was a Baath party leader for 24 years...he has now hired on a number of other Baath party members...and they are plotting ways to screw up ther U.S. occupation.

1. I think there was a small thread - here's story from CBS
That was a good 60 Minutes - this story and the Abercrombie and Fitch story on how they discriminate in hiring by wanting only young white beautiful people on the sales floor.

Make sure you read down in the story about the councilman US inprisoned

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/12/04/60minutes/main586841.shtml

When the U.S. invasion came last spring with promises of democracy and self-rule, people in Karbala were among the first to try and take charge of their own affairs.

Religious and community leaders got together and selected a city council to represent them, and a security force to protect them. They had assumed that their experiment in democracy would be applauded by the American military.

It was not. U.S. troops disarmed the protection force, arrested popular city councilmen and put back into power some of the same people who had served Saddam.

It has left people here angry and frustrated, including Dr. Hussein Shahristani, one of the most respected exiles to return after the war.

2. I saw it and it'll blow your mind!
The guy they installed was a fmr henchman of Saddam's. The Iraqi's figured he'd be turned over for war crimes when US came in. Instead, this guy is now a police chief!!! They showed this guy just sitting there and Steve Croft asked him some questions and he just has this evil smile on his face. He looked like god you americans are stupid. They think he ratted out another citizen he didn't like. He or someone told US commanders this guy was plotting against US. So US goes and sends 15 Marines and raids this guy's house in Karbala. Turns out the guy s actually trying to help us and is a Karbala City Council member! OMG!!! The guy is on the run from the US b/c they are still trying to arrest him. He told 60mins thst he was totally honest w/ US and they tried to arrest him. Meanwhile the thug who worked w/ Saddam is in charge. WTF!!!!!!!!!! What? We have the fucken keystone cops running things in Iraq!!! I just couldn't believe what I was seeing. Just when it can't get anymore bizarre a new level of wackyness erupts!!

3. And I hear that every time CBS asked officials about it...
...all they got was "no comment"

Just when you think it can't get any worse or weirder.
