Joe Lieberman is better than any Republican alive
Let's not forget this.

He's no Zell Miller... And I would vote for Holy Joe over John McCaine as well.

The dude has a right-wing moralistic streak, but you guys are acting like Wal-Mart voters and letting yourselves be swayed by social issues. They're not that important! What is really important is: DO I HAVE MONEY TO BUY FOOD OR PAY RENT? Joe is one of the most progressive economic Dems in the primary field, so while he may be my #9 choice overall and he would have no chance of winning, he would still have my 100% support if he were to run vs. Bush or any other Repub.

Plus, he sounds just like Willy Tanner from Alf.

And, I can imagine him dressed in a diaper on Jerry Springer. He looks like an overgrown baby and makes me laugh.

1. I think he as an ACU rating under 20, Chafee is like 50
but most of the really hostile attacks come from people who are usually obsessivly anti-iraq(and sometimes afganistan) war, and very often the "zionism is racism crowd".

2. Actually
on social issues, Lieberman has one of the most liberal voting records in the Seante. He routinely gets 100% ratings from pro-choice groups and 0% ratings from anti-choice groups. He is also strong on the environment, civil rights and most domestic issues.

I only fault him for his hawkish foreign policy stand. But even then, I admire him for voting one way and then backing that vote up, not trying to dodge or explain it away.

And I agree- Lieberman is a better elected official than any repub is. He is more liberal than Chafee, who is often lionized on this site.

4. you're right
I was thinking more on the church-state stuff when I said "social issues," and war, of course.

However, Lieberman is the only person in the primary, correct me if I'm wrong, who has said in no veiled language-- "We will raise taxes on rich people."

but can you tell him to quit appearing on FAUX criticizing my fellow dems? That goes for Hannitys radio show as well.

3. Wrong...Chafee, Specter, Snowe, should I continue?
Edited on Tue Dec-09-03 02:05 PM by sleipnir
I'd rather have any of those three as my Pres than Lieberman. Lieberman is VERY scary and is pro-censorship, which eliminates him in my book regarless of the (D) after his name.

11. No that's not just it, he's also against artistic freedom.
Edited on Tue Dec-09-03 02:12 PM by sleipnir
He's tried to censor Hollywood and the film industry, for "violence." He's gone after videogame designers, how long before he starts going after writers, artists or theatre or any other number of creative arts? I'm very sensitive on this issue and I have no room to give ground

Trust me, I've talked to him before and he's very controlling and it only takes a beginning to get us to a destructive end.

That said, he severly blurs the line of Democrat and I wish he'd change to Independant. He's not the man I'd want to run my country, but then again, I'm not going to be voting for him.

17. So if Joe gets the nomination
will you be voting for * or just pissing your vote away on some third party no-hoper (thereby effectively helping to elect *)?

25. If that's the kind of Dem we want to nominate, then maybe I don't want to
be a part of this party.

But between Bush and Lieberman, well of course I'd rather have Lieberman hands down, but that doesn't mean I'd vote for him. But what's my one vote really going to do? Besides, against Bush, Lieberman is a no-hoper. He's not going to get nominated, so this is all theoretical anyway!

19. Should the 11 dems who are as or more conservative switch as well?
that sounds like a really great way to have influence in the senate

with a 36-12-51 ratio.

We should really have alot of influence then.

Senator ACU Rating

Miller 56
Nelson (NE) 53
Breaux 47
Hollings 37
Lincoln 23
Carper 22
Bayh 21
Johnson 21
Conrad 21
Ried 20
Nelson (FL) 20
Lieberman 20

27. The old saying "With friends like those, who needs enemies?"
I can't believe you'd use the ACU ratings...from a radical conservative site...

It's only a measure of how well the candidates toed a party line, not how "conservative" they really are. The system is ludicris and weights certain issues more than others, IE IWR, Medicare bill...

And Lieberman has a 100% ACLU rating because he DIDN'T VOTE!! on three of the four bills they are rating!

20. WWZD?
The Zombie Woof knows that that means...

Of course, I had the same problem with Mrs. Gore, but vote for the Alster in spite of her association with the pro-censorship crowd. And an actual dislike of AG, which wasn't that uncommon among people who worked on the Hill on the late 80s when I was there.

Which might explain why the press didn't like him....

But I digress....

Edited on Tue Dec-09-03 02:05 PM by dennis4868
Holy Joe lost me during the whole Monica fiasco by going to the floor of the senate and bashing the last elected president, Bill Clinton. Now that I have said that, I would vote for him in a general election against any repub!

7. You are so right
You can't eat principles, as someone once told me. What is it about that that people don't understand? I hate the one where people say "I could never vote for him because he voted for the war". Ok, and that Congressman/Senator is very in favor of economic policies that put people back to work even the laid off person that can't vote for him because of his war vote. They would rather have their principles than food or rent money. Go figure. That describes too many of the Dean supporters that it scares me about where people's priorities are.

10. Maybe. I feel sorry for him - only a bit - very little bit.
I mean, it was poetic justice to have that coming to him, but still...Joe postponed his running last year waiting for loserman to decide...Jerks will be jerks, huh?

12. that's crazy
He is a confirmed supply-sider who touts his "support of business" (you know what that means, right?) as a badge of honor. If you tried to tell him he was a progressive economic force he would be pissed and look around to see if any of his friends from the business world heard you say that.

16. I like Joe and all but he has too much of a high opinion of himself
that's not seen by everyone. When Gore chose him for his running mate, that is what started it.

Nevertheless, I would still vote Lieberman over whistle ass no doubt!

18. HELL YES HE IS!!!!!
He's just mistaken about a few things. But Lieberman has an excellent voting record on many key issues, additionally he is a man of integrity.

He's not at the top of my list for the prez race, but he's one of the 'good guys' that's for sure.

24. I'd take Olympia Snowe and several other republicans
before Holy Joe. His ties to the financial industry have created absolutely horrible positions for him...bankruptcy "reform" act, CPA get out of jail free card in the 1990's that led to the latest wave of corporate scandals....IWR vote...huge likkudnick PNACer.

His policies suck.
