1. Just terrible news
I remember liking him a lot when I was quite young and he ran for president. Seemed like such an honorable, intelligent man to me.

10. He was a great man
A good and great man with progressive ideas. He represented his country well. I was pleased for the short time he was in the '88 race to support him for president.

Especially of Lincoln. A fine senator and would have made a fine president, as well.

One of the best of the old school. He was a fine US Senator.

If I had a bowtie I'd wear one out of respect.

16. We've lost a great man today.
From
http://www.startribune.com/stories/484/4258324.html

Simon blended fiscal conservatism and social liberalism. Raised during the Depression, the son of a Lutheran minister, he saw the great needs facing the country and how government responded through New Deal programs.

22. Senator Simon's legacy to us all:
Edited on Tue Dec-09-03 04:37 PM by Melinda
""We have problems here at home and we ought to be reaching out across the borders of race, ethnic background, religion, sexual orientation and whatever divides us and we have to work together. Leaders ought to do that."

"Lead in reaching out to others within our nation. We need to reach out across the barriers of race, and religion, and ethnic background, and sexual orientation, and every other barrier that separates Americans--to reach out and make sure opportunity is here for everyone.

Almost one-fourth of our children are living in poverty. No other western industrialized nation has anything close to that figure. This is not an act of God. There is no divine intervention that says children in America have to live in poverty more than children in Italy, or Denmark, or Great Britain, or Canada, or other western industrialized nations. It a result of flawed policy. It is a result of policy that panders to those who make campaign contributions rather than to needs . . . I want you to challenge us and to reach out to people within our nation. When we say the pledge of allegiance, we say 'one nation, under God, indivisible.' We ought to be achieving that goal and I want you to help us achieve it..." -Senator Paul Simon, 1997.

We who believe in these ideals, who know that they are right, and good, and just, must carry on the legacy of Senator Simon and all those who went before him... rest in peace, good and faithful patriot; God bless you Senator Simon.

25. Damn, what a day...
From highs to lows. My condolences to Senator Simon's family. Paul Simon was a gentleman - I had the good fortune to meet him (w/ Carol Mosley-Braun) at a campaign stop in Peoria about 11 years ago. He was gracious and warm, and we talked for probably 10 minutes or so about issues and the '92 campaign in general. He laughed when I asked him, "why the bow tie?" (During the '88 presidential primaries, Al Franken spoofed him on SNL. Dressed as Simon and speaking in that drawn-out midwestern accent, Al would say, "People are always ask me... why the bow tie?"). Senator Simon got the joke...

Deeply saddened to hear of his passing...

26. he was my first presidential choice
The 1988 election was the first I was old enough to vote in, and for Super Tuesday, the bow-tied senator from Illinois received my first vote.

He was a truly principled and humane liberal, and in recent years, a fierce advocate for reforming problems with the global water supply. He recognized that water is one of the main points of contention in the Israel and Palestinian conflict.

He stood for the civil rights of all Americans, and for peaceful conflict resolution.

Condolences to his family, and thank you for your service Senator Simon.
