6. It could take a while for meaningful results
I've heard that a very large amoung of absentee ballots were cast. So far turnout has exceeded my expectations. I figured it would be very low considering this is the third since the recall, but apparently all the attention has gotten folks very excited. I can't remember being called this much in any other election. It's crazy. I wish the party had worked this hard against Ahnuld.

10. No word yet
Results are supposed to be coming in, or streaming in in the next couple hours. They have screens up to watch the results of the counting, and Gonzalez is supposed to show up in the Mission sometime around 9 pm pst.

No word yet, either way. Expect some preliminary numbers in the next few minutes.

In the 80's his brother was a high power lawyer for big time drug dealers The Reygun Administration set him up & he sat in prison for years until the courts overturned his convictions

;-)

There aren't enough votes left for Gonzalez to come back. He'll finish within 9,000-13,000 votes or so but, thankfully, not close enough for a recount or any such nonsense.

Consider this. If Gonzalez had won then, if Camejo had run for President on the Green ticket, between a Green SF mayor and a Republican Governor, California might have very much in play in 2004.

79. YESSSS!!!!!!!!
Mayor Gavin Newsome: Sounds GOOD to me! Matt put up a fight, but proved that he was just too extremist even for San Francisco. I agree with Gavin's comments that he would be a far left liberal in any other city in America, but to be cast as some sort of "conservative" is an "Only in San Francisco" story.

He will do SF right. Also, I fully agree that the panhandling has gone on too long and is a disgrace to the city. Panhandling in San Francisco is a BIG BUSINESS. Don't let anybody fool you. The trash has got to be cleaned up off our streets. I'm sorry some super far-lefties can't see that. There are plenty of city services in the city and most of these panhandlers don't avail themselves of the help for fear of having to follow house rules! Fortunately, most of San Francisco agrees (according to all the polls) and enough turned out to elect Gavin mayor.

IT'S GREAT NEWS!!!!

117. Okay, maybe the word
"trash" was too harsh, BUT, as a regular visitor to SF I can tell you that the homeless situation IS a problem. First, not all are homeless; I wish I had the name of the documentary on SF regarding this topic, but unforunately I don't. It's no secret that SF is both liberal and well-off, attracting many business-minded con-artists to the area. It's sad, because the citizens of SF are good-hearted people and for them to send this type of message shows how bad things have gotten.

I think bush is trash. I think cheney is worse than trash. Am I closed-minded now? I don't think the original poster was referring to all homeless as trash; I think the ones he was referring to were simply "posers" -- those who use the plight of the homeless to make money. Again, this isn't the case with all those in SF, but it has been a big enough problem to where even liberal and open-minded people in that city have said enough is enough.

I saw a homeless man urinating on the sidewalk in downtown Seattle this morning. "Once upon a time--of all the good days in the year, on Christmas Eve--old Scrooge sat busy in his counting-house."

"I am the Ghost of Christmas Present," said the Spirit. "Look upon me!"

Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol

=========================

About a third of the adult homeless population has served their country in the armed services. On any given night, as many as 250,000 veterans are living on the streets or in shelters, and perhaps twice as many experience homelessness over the course of a year. Many other veterans are considered at risk because of their poverty, lack of support from family and friends, and precarious living conditions in cheap hotels or in overcrowded or substandard housing.

The National Coalition for Homeless Veterans conservatively estimate that approximately one-third of America's homeless are veterans. Nearly 58% of the homeless veteran population are from the Vietnam era and 25% are veterans that have served since the Vietnam War.

124. right...
All of the major business analysts talk about the need to keep inflation at 5-6% in order to keep the economy working the way they want it, but the REAL problem of course is not the people who fight to keep 5-6% of people unemployed, but the people who are affected by those plans. They have to be gotten off the street and put - somewhere. After all, we don't want to be reminded that the policies Newsom and his crowd support are purposefully keeping 1 out of 20 people unemployed on purpose.

The USSR was supposed to be some horrible place, yet they managed to have 0% unemployment. Yet they can't figure out how to keep that happenign here. The BS piles hire and hire. Thankfully, 47% of San Franciscans can see that. I guess 47% of the voters in San Francisco are "super far lefties" as you describe Gonzalez supporters. You know, people who are janitors, carpenters, taxi cab drivers and the like, not respectable people like a bar owner or something.

111. courage, Tinoire
Tinoire, you will notice how almost none of the Newsom supporters are addressing issues. The solid majority is partisan generalization.

When they do address issues, they are unimpressive, such as a generalization earlier in this thread on the homeless in which the writer hopes that Newsom will clean up "things."

You have posted the hard data on campaign donations. They aren't touching it. You have pointed out the difference between Green Party affiliation in SF (3%) and the close race. They aren't touching that either. And obviously everyone has been able to see that Clinton and Gore were flown in to influence the mayor's race when the opponent is a Green. I suspect that neutral observers can grasp the implications, but the partisans are having none of it.

Don't let them get to you. The Newsom victory in SF was a victory against the Democratic base. The discussants who aren't seeing it will never see it because they simply don't want to.

The progressives put up a good fight. Let's look ahead.

I wanted Matt to win but I guess I can't have everything. He had a helluva showing — 3% registered but 48% voting Green, that must've exceeded just about everyone's expectations but Gonzalez'. Newsom seems to play "connect-the-dots" when it comes to politics, choosing what will make him look better by trial and error, but I won't grudge him, he won a fair race. He's an interesting politician and given his youth and energy might do interesting things yet.

110. inside the numbers...
in November, the moderate and conservative candidates (for SF) got:
Moderates:
Newsom 42
Leal 8 (once appointed to Board by Willie Brown)
Ribera 2 (the only republican)
Total=52%

Liberals:
Gonzalez 20
Alioto 16
Ammiano 10
Total=46%

in the December runoff:
Newsom=53% (moderate)
Gonzalez=47% (liberal/green)

As exciting as the election race was, it seems like very few voters changed their minds in terms of their ideology. Of course, it's not the same voters.

Of course, issues matter...

Let me give you two hypotheticals in the hope that you don't think I am singling out the Greens...

Would the Democrats benefit if the Greens ran candidates in every open senate and house race?

and

Would the Republicans benefit if a Buchanan like candidate ran in every open senate and house race?

The answer is in the question...

Our whole federal system with winner take all races militates against third parties so in my humble opinion a left wing party hurts Dems and a right wing party hurts Republicans...

I have read where Ralph Nader said the Greens were in a "death struggle" with the Democratic party... Wow....

The only people who would benefit from such a struggle are the Republicans....

115. shifts
Like you, I have more impressive Dem credentials than most. However, when evaluating the merits of an argument, those are weak considerations at best.

I hope that you pay careful attention to your answer to me. You have engaged in a shift of emphasis. After affirming that ideas matter, you change your focus.

At some point, we encounter reasons for our preferences. Hopefully, a political party comes close to representing those. When a candidate in our chosen party is in bed (politically) with Bechtel and Reagan's former Secretary of State, that should give us pause, at least. When the party of the little guy campaigns against those little guys, that should motivate us to double-check the meaningfulness of the label. I wonder which candidate's ideas you'd prefer if party labels were stripped away. That, and not a-priori titles, is what gives our choices meaning.

The SF mayor's race was a victory against the Democratic base. Surely that can't be much of a cause for celebration.

116. Take heart, San Franciscans!
Tinoire called me last night with the news of Newsom's win -- as much as I wanted Matt to win for the sake of my town, it's not the end of the world.

As anyone who has been paying attention to City politics knows, the Board of Supervisors has been successfully chipping away at the power of the Mayor for the last few years in direct response to the way Willie threw his weight around. Our Board is as powerful a political influence as it has ever been in our City.

If Matt had won, the Board make-up would have allowed him to move his agenda with relative ease.

With Newsom's win, it is going to be FAR more difficult for him to make any major moves unless he takes them to the voters via initiatives. He has ONE ally on the Board -- Tony Hall -- everyone else tends to vote along the lives of Matt, who is still Board President.

I'm disappointed, but not heartbroken. :)

BTW, I have to say that I was impressed with the energy Matt's people put into this campaign. I got visited by them at home twice, I saw them out in the rain all over the City on election day doing GOTV and peppering intersections holding signs.

In contract I didn't see a SINGLE Newsom supporter out once during this whole election cycle -- not one.
