21. Bechtel's happy- been eying our water for years. Thanks Bechtel enablers.
Edited on Wed Dec-10-03 02:23 AM by Tinoire
Good thing for the Democratic party that the winner is the candidate George Schultz pumped several thousand dollars- we wouldn't want any of the lucrative business Bechtel conducts from San Francisco to suffer... Nor would we want a mayor who sympathizes with anti-war dock-workers when they refuse to load cargo.

Nothing like having a Mayor who duked out of the Supes vote on the Patriot Act because it would have upset all his Republican friends.

The homeless must really be blessing the Democratic Party tonight!

Yippee! Another "win"! Another win for a DLC poster boy.

Thank you Clinton for your integrity. Thank you Gore for your compassion. Thank you Jesse Jackson for not putting partisan politics over the well-being of our homeless brothers and sisters. Thank you Newsom supporters. I'll remember this with every homeless person I pass- if I can see them- if they're not floated out to sea on a barge where they won't offend the sensitive eyes of Newsom's ritzy Getty-fortune friends.

100 to Watch: Gavin Newsom
Member, Board of Supervisors, San Fransisco

Background: Businessperson.

Why I got into public service: Growing up in a family that participated in the city's public life, I always considered such public service a normal part of any citizen's responsibility. My business background gave me an important perspective on how to make government more responsive to our customers.

Top Issue: Reducing homelessness and saving lives.

Guiding Value: Quality service. I have a responsibility to make sure every San Franciscan receives efficient and effective service from our government. San Francisco has been, and can be again, a national model of a compassionate city government in a diverse urban setting. I want to make sure that we can help uphold our city's core values by improving how we deliver vital city services.

#1 Rule of Politics: Put sound policy ahead of politics.

DLC Spotlights 100 of the Rising New Democrat Stars
The '100 to Watch' Represent the Future of the Democratic Party

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) today released 100 New Democrats to Watch: The Next Generation of Leadership, which casts a spotlight on elected leaders who are making a difference in their states and communities by using innovative means to solve real problems and advance the goals of security, opportunity and responsibility.

The announcement came at a DLC strategy session with more than 60 state and local New Democrat elected officials to discuss their "outside the Beltway" ideas and views on the future of Democratic politics. Gov. Mark Warner (VA), Senator Evan Bayh (IN), Columbus (OH) Mayor Michael Coleman, and Pennsylvania State Rep. Jennifer Mann, joined the DLC's Al From and Bruce Reed at a briefing to discuss what the real and current voices of the Democratic Party have to say.

it is amazing that a Green could garner 47 percent of the vote in a city where only 3 percent of the electorate is registered as Green.

Oh well....it was a good run for Gonzalez. A lot closer than I would have thought. Gore's endorsement probably helped put Newsom over the edge.

10. Kudos to Willie Brown for stealing the vote again!
There hasn't been a Democratic machine like your since Tammany Hall. You can't argue with success. I hope the Republicans give you a nice retirement Willie, and may God have mercy on your soul.

11. stealing the vote?
Do you have ANY evidence of such a thing? San Francisco uses a hand-marked ballot - no funny machines.

Is it really unreasonable to think that a long-term Supervisor and the Democratic nominee couldn't win a fair election in San Francisco?

13. For a Green,
And you all know I can't stand the Greens, I thought Gonzalez was ok. Look, the City Council President of San Francisco is a Green. I'm sure he'll advocate the Green position well. He ran a good campaign, and I hope that his supporters (especially the 20-somethings) stay involved in the process.

That said, it's absolutely ridiculous to claim voter fraud. Sometimes elections don't turn out the way people want them to. I've been on the losing side of elections: it hurts. But ultimately, even defeat serves our country and our democracy.

I may never vote with some that post here. That doesn't mean I don't respect them.

Mike

15. no, not overtly
but it can make a substantial difference. More money = more ads, more tv time, more exposure, more connections and so on. It'd be nice if we could get corporate money out of elections; it would even the playing field and allow for the possiblity of elections being decided based on the merits of those running. IMO, we won't have a real democracy until we get publicly funded campaigns.

16. 4 million:
Doesn't buy that much in San Francisco. Next to NY and WDC, it is the most expensive media market in the country. Besides, tv and radio ads don't really work in mayoral elections: only about 3 percent of the people you reach can actually vote for you. Gonzalez had enough to establish a good grass-roots effort. That costs money, but not 4 million.

politics is about making networks, and trying to get them on your side. Don't tell me Gonzalez didn't do it: he did. That's politics. It may be distasteful to you, but it's the game, and it's played. Denying or crying about it isn't a way to further an agenda.

If you want to be Green, fine. We have our network here in the Democratic Party. Networking is politics. Build your own network if you want to, but it'll be a very, very long time before the Green Network even comes close to the Democratic network.
