Environmental racism from Howard Dean?
Edited on Thu Dec-11-03 02:22 PM by _Jumper_
Dean allegedly supported sending Vermont's nuclear waste to the poor, mostly Hispanic town of Sierra Blanca, Texas, 16 miles from the Mexican border -- a plan described as "blatant environmental racism" by Paul Wellstone.

I read this at the Dean parody site. Deaniacs, say it ain't so!

1. To which state did *your* Gov advocate sending your state's nuclear waste?
Presuming that your state has nuclear generation plants

3. What you're hearing is very misleading
Texas, Maine and Vermont entered into an agreement that Maine and Vermont would pay Texas to take LOW LEVEL waste. All parties were in agreement and the majority of lawmakers in DC put their stamp of approval on the deal. Vermont and Maine had no choice in the site and were not responsible for the research, studies and what not that Texas needed to sort out to select the site. Bush put together a bogus study that left out important information to get the site approved. When the truth about the site being unsuitable came out, the deal basically fell apart and none of Vermont's low level waste ever went to Texas, end of story.

To make a long story short, Bush hadn't been in office long and no one really knew just how evil and diabolical he was. And it would appear that Bush was just as rotten then as he is now. It's irresponsible for anyone to blame this one on Dean. Hope that helps explain it a little better for you.

9. you need to take that into a post refuting this article
With every thread that negatively propagandizes Dean, we need to refute it by making a counter-thread with facts.

6. Storm in a tea cup
>>Dean has defended the compact by saying that Vermont was responding to a federal requirement that states dispose of their nuclear waste and that his state had no role in choosing the site.

A Texas environmental agency ultimately blocked the nuclear waste dump from being built there.

Environmentalists in Texas and Vermont said Dean did nothing to urge Texas to reconsider the location, despite an outcry from environmental and Latino activists and Democrats in Congress.

They also said there was little Dean could have done about the site selection because that was Texas' legal responsibility.

"I fought against Howard Dean on this for a long time, but the bottom line is the federal government gave states title to nuclear waste," said former Vermont state Sen. Elizabeth Ready, an anti-nuclear activist. "Even though I unalterably opposed the position of my own governor, what would Kerry have done if he had a legal obligation?"<<

Thanks for the link though.
