but the difference in NH and IA is that the candidates are so much more accessible. Literally anyone who cares to make the effort can meet, in person, every candidate.

So yes the mainstream media has an influence, but there are other ways of getting info on the candidates. It depends on how much effort the individual wants to put in and how active and effective the campaigns are.

3. Yes, but...
but you do see more local coverage of events because they are happening, well...locally.

You tend to get more of the candidate X was at smallvillage retirement home today and said "I like old folks" type stories. If the campaigns have their act together they can cultivate local media and use it to get their message out despite the national "narrative."

But my experience is that Iowa and NH voters love to screw with conventional wisdom - New Hampshire moreso.
