Stock Market Responds---NASDAQ Down Now.....
and DOW on up a bit. I thought I read people here at DU predicting a 200 point surge today. I guess there's still time until the market closes, but maybe Saddam's capture is really not such a big deal, long-term anyway.

1. Markets do not work that way.
They do not respond in predictable ways to news events like "Saddam has been captured" or "Bush wins another term". Unless the information is DIRECTLY linked to market activity, like changes in the Federal Reserve rates, fluctuations of the dollar, etc., you cannot accurately predict the market from news events.

3. Not true, the market seems to respond to war news
especially if it's big news.

6. If it does, it's because of a common cause....
... not like one causes the other. If the corporations and investors of the world think there's money to be had, they'll go up. That is true whether war is ending or beginning.

5. I heard an interview
with a trader on Bloomberg earlier. he put it this way: the dog chasing the car finally caught it, his teeth are on the bumper so now what?
There have been attacks since Sadaam's capture so it doesn't appear that this will stop or change anything.

7. like I said earlier
The capture of Saddam has lost it's steam because he was irrelevant about 6 months ago when we captured Baghdad. People already considered him history. That is why Bush got little bounce in the new ABC/Wash Post poll.

11. still haven't changed the headline
even worse than when I posted it, and they still haven't changed the story to "rally fizzles." They'll have to explain the fizzle, too. Did Saddam escape?

13. you mean the "psychological milestone"?
that 10,000?

Something tells me it won't be called a milestone if it gets crossed going the other way. It won't lead off all the evening newscasts.

10. I like how they had headlines yesterday saying
"Stock Market to Rally Tomorrow on New of Saddam's Capture" like it was some preordained event or something. One thing I have learned about the stock market is that virtually any prediction is about as good as flipping a coin.
